Matic makes progress in finding next club with Mourinho making call to old Man Utd favourite

Jose Mourinho giving instructions to Nemanja Matic

There has been progress in relation to one of the guaranteed Manchester United exits this summer, after a report provided a significant update relating to Nemanja Matic.

The Serbian midfielder has a contract until 2023 with Manchester United but has already confirmed he will be leaving the club this summer. He has mainly been a backup this season, so will move on in search of more regular gametime.

Incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will have his own ideas of how to strengthen Matic’s position. Paul Pogba is also ready to leave, depriving them of another option in midfield.

There will therefore likely be an evolution in the centre of the pitch at Old Trafford. But Matic will not be a part of it.

He looks likely to be heading to Italy to continue his career. Just like Pogba, he has been linked with a free transfer to Juventus.

However, a more feasible option for Matic would be to reunite with former Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho at Roma.

Mourinho recently admitted his “trust” for Matic, but vowed not to speak about his future as long as he belongs to the Red Devils.

Behind the scenes, though, it appears there has been movement. According to Calciomercato, Mourinho is calling Matic about a move to the Italian capital.

Since becoming Roma head coach last summer, Mourinho has played an active role in their recruitment. The same will happen again ahead of his second season in charge.

Although he has been freshly linked with the Newcastle job – despite Eddie Howe’s good work – Mourinho has confirmed his commitment to Roma for 2022-23. But he will need better players to help his side improve.

Matic is a player of high pedigree, after representing the likes of United and Chelsea. At both clubs, Mourinho was the man to sign him – and history could repeat itself again.

Mourinho will hold talks with Matic to convince him of the project at Roma, who will be fighting for a first ever major European trophy next Wednesday.

There are no details about the length of contract or value of wages that may be on offer in Rome.

Matic makes sense for Roma as Man Utd stint nears end

After starting 16 Premier League matches this season, Matic has still been playing a fair amount. But he will have to pick his next move carefully to ensure his career doesn’t dwindle out.

Roma would be a safe choice for him to receive regular gametime. Not only does he already have their manager’s trust, there is no area of their squad with a greater need for reinforcements than midfield.

Mourinho wanted to sign Granit Xhaka from Arsenal last summer but failed to do so. He eventually settled for a loan deal for Porto’s Sergio Oliveira by January.

It is not yet clear if Oliveira will stay at Roma. Besides, any of their existing options could risk being sold. Mourinho will want to add stability to the position and Matic can provide that.

Although he will be 34 years old by the start of next season, he is still capable of performing in one of Europe’s top leagues.

Another player of a similar age, Rui Patricio, has done well since trading the Premier League for Rome. Mourinho may be best off finding a younger option too, but Matic could follow suit and give him a guarantee where he needs it most.

And his defensive traits in midfield are just what Mourinho is looking for.

Now, with contact ready to be established between the pair again, it may make sense for the outcome to be a transfer to Roma for Matic.
