Manchester United could end up signing a Germany World Cup player after it was revealed he would like to play for Erik ten Hag’s side, following rumours of a move to Everton.
Germany had a disappointing World Cup in Qatar. After winning the tournament in 2014, they were knocked out at the first hurdle this time around. Japan and Spain went through to the knockout stages ahead of them, with Hansi Flick’s team finishing in third place.
They started off with a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Japan. Ilkay Gundogan put Germany ahead in the 33rd minute from the penalty spot. But goals from Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano helped Japan secure a memorable victory.
Germany then snatched a late draw against Spain in their next outing. Alvaro Morata had set Spain on their way to a win with his second goal of the tournament, though striker Niclas Fullkrug stepped up late on to hand Germany a point.
Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2 in their final group match. Goals came from Serge Gnabry, Kai Havertz (two) and Fullkrug. But it was too late as Japan surprisingly won the group and Spain finished second.
While the Germans did not have a great World Cup, there were a few players who impressed. Jamal Musiala was brilliant, while Fullkrug was a breakout star.
And it is the latter who could end up moving to the Premier League, if fresh reports are to be believed. According to The Boot Room, who cite German newspaper Bild, Man Utd have the chance to snare Fullkrug from Werder Bremen.
The 29-year-old striker has offered his services to Ten Hag. This is because he can see himself playing for Man Utd in the future.
Everton may lose out on goalscorer to Man Utd
This will come as a major blow for Everton. They are one of several clubs to hold an interest in Fullkrug. And the Toffees have found out that a €20million (£17.5m) offer would tempt Werder Bremen into selling.
Unfortunately for Frank Lampard, who wants Fullkrug to provide competition and backup for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Fullkrug will reject Everton’s advances as he favours a switch to Man Utd.
The 6ft 2in attacker knows Ten Hag is in need of a new player to lead his forward line. The Red Devils have brought in loanee Wout Weghorst, but a long-term replacement needs to be found in the summer.
Fullkrug seems to think he could achieve a Man Utd transfer at the end of the campaign. He wants to capitalise on his stock being high right now, following his World Cup goals.
Fullkrug could be a good punt for Man Utd. After all, he is a striker who has bagged 29 league goals in the last two seasons and is available for just £17.5m.
Man Utd supporters would probably want a bigger name to arrive at Old Trafford, such as Dusan Vlahovic or Victor Osimhen. Although, Ten Hag’s capture of Weghorst shows he does not care what other people think as long as the player fits into his system and project.
