Newcastle learn Man Utd star’s price tag as fourth source confirms ruthless Ten Hag will swing the axe

Man Utd stars Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho

A fourth source has tipped Man Utd to axe a high profile star in the summer and Newcastle – who are making a ‘sustained’ push to secure his signing – have learned how much a deal will cost.

The Telegraph’s James Ducker previously insisted Man Utd will have to ‘sell well’ over the summer. Doing so is required if Erik ten Hag is to be given the funding he required to sign a top-class centre-forward.

Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen are understood to be the two leading contenders to join United, though either move will likely cost north of £100m.

Of course, a Qatari-backed takeover or one closer to home from Sir Jim Ratcliffe could loosen the purse strings. However, United must still conform to Financial Fair Play regulations.

One player tipped to depart by multiple outlets is Scotland international Scott McTominay.

The 26-year-old is a homegrown talent, though has fallen out of favour under Ten Hag.

Christian Eriksen and Casemiro comprise the Dutchman’s preferred midfield pairing. Fred is chief back-up, thus relegating McTominay to a lowly fourth choice.

McTominay’s current contract does not expire until 2025, though that’s not stopped multiple outlets all agreeing he’ll be axed by Ten Hag at season’s end.

Four sources expect McTominay exit

Indeed, the Athletic previously reported United will ‘re-evaluate’ McTominay’s future in the summer amid a ‘sustained’ push by Newcastle to secure his signature.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe is a huge admirer of the Scot thanks in large part to two traits. Newcastle explored a move in January, though United refused to sell mid-season.

talkSPORT subsequently reported the Red Devils are ‘ready to cash in on both’ McTominay and Harry Maguire in the summer.

Like McTominay, Maguire is now arguably fourth choice in his position behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw. The latter has often deputised out of position at left centre-back in 2023 at Maguire’s expense.

Trusted reporter Ben Jacobs then confirmed in a TEAMtalk exclusive McTominay is a player who could depart.

“The first thing is to stress though is that outgoings are going to be very important,” Jacobs told TEAMtalk last week. “And Scott McTominay is one name that could depart.

“Ten Hag is quite glad that he’s there and he made it quite clear he didn’t want to entertain any January offers.

“But come the summer, because Casemiro has come in, McTominay will be available on the market. Newcastle, in particular, are one to watch there.”

Man Utd price tag emerges

Now, Football Insider have joined the chorus of those claiming McTominay’s time at Old Trafford is nearing its end. What’s more, the online outlet also cited the cost of doing business with Newcastle.

FI stated Man Utd are ‘willing to listen to offers’ for McTominay this summer. On that front, the round figure of £25m could be enough to seal a deal.

The article adds Man Utd are yet to make a final decision on the midfielder, though all signs currently point to the exit door.

McTominay has been on Man Utd’s books for over 20 years dating all the way back to 2002. Ten Hag is clearly not one for sentiment, however, and it’s looking increasingly likely the current campaign will be McTominay’s last as a Man Utd player.

Their loss may well become Newcastle’s gain and the Magpies will be desperate for a raft of new additions over the summer given they’re all but certain to have a European campaign next season.
