Man Utd legend makes bold prediction on Ten Hag success this season, as warning issued to rivals

New Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes thinks Erik ten Hag could help the Red Devils achieve an impressive Premier League finish this term following a rollercoaster start.

Manchester United have put in some great performances in the early parts of the season, while also suffering from some disappointing results. They picked up a four-match winning streak in the Premier League, beating Liverpool along the way, before losing 1-0 to Real Sociedad in the Europa League on September 8.

Manchester United got back to winning ways in the following match against Sheriff Tiraspol, only to be thrashed 6-3 by rivals Manchester City the next time out.

Ten Hag’s men showed grit and determination to pick up a late win over Omonia FC in the Europa League on Thursday night. Scott McTominay popped up in stoppage time to hand them a 1-0 victory, making it nine points from four matches for them in the group stage.

Man Utd still have a little bit of work to do if they want to qualify. But they are pretty much guaranteed a spot in the next round and will now set their sights on winning Group E.

Following the hard fought win, Ten Hag was asked if picking up three points is the most important thing. He replied: “No. Football is about scoring goals and we create so many chances but the ball went in only one time. But it was enough for the time and we’re happy with that.”

Scholes, who helped Man Utd win 11 Premier League titles during a glittering career, has given his verdict on what the club might achieve this campaign.

He has sent a warning to the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool by suggesting Man Utd could finish second in the Prem, behind City.

Paul Scholes tips Man Utd for great Prem finish

“After those first two games I was really concerned they wouldn’t finish in the top six,” Scholes said on BT Sport (via Manchester World).

“But the way they’ve fought back –  [they] have won five out of the last six Premier League games. They’ve given themselves a great chance.

“They do look like they could be the best of the rest [after City]. I think they’ve got the squad of players which shows that they could.

“You have to remember, it’s still very early days for some of these players who have come from different clubs. The manager and his staff as well.

“He’s still getting to know them, he’s still trying to find the right blend with his team. And the longer it goes on the more confident I’ll be that they’ll finish in the top four.”

Second place never used to be a big achievement for Man Utd. But it would be a great finish for them this term given the big period of change they are going through.

Such a finish would show that Ten Hag is the right man for the job. It would also demonstrate that he is getting the current crop of players to improve.

Ending the Prem season behind only City would give Man Utd a great foundation to build on.

Challenging their local rivals for the title would be incredibly hard. But this is exactly what Ten Hag and the Man Utd board of directors want to do.

Meanwhile, Gary Neville has given his opinion on Cristiano Ronaldo and how the striker should handle his current situation.
