Paul Scholes has had his say on the Premier League title race

Paul Scholes has named the one current Manchester United midfielder that it would have been a ‘disaster’ for him to have played alongside.

The Red Devils legend played alongside some of the greats of the Premier League era but he claims partnering Bruno Fernandes in Erik ten Hag’s first team would not have gone well for him.

While Scholes is a big fan of the Portugal midfielder he just believes their games were not compatible.

Fernandes scored twice as Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 at the World Cup on Monday to book their place in the last 16.

However, another United midfielder is also having an excellent tournament in the form of Casemiro.

The Brazilian scored a stunning winner as his country beat Switzerland 1-0 to also progress to the knockout stage.

And Scholes believes he would have partnered much better with Casemiro than Fernandes in United’s engine room.

“It’s quite an easy question because of the style of play,” he told the club’s official website. “I’d much prefer to play with Casemiro, somebody who I knew could play the position really well.

“He probably reminds me of [Michael] Carrick, [Nicky] Butt, Roy Keane and those type of players.

“With Bruno, I think we would be all over the place and us two together in midfield would be an absolute disaster!

“Just both of us would want to be up the field, contributing and scoring goals and trying to win games. Look, if I had to choose out of the two, it would have to be Casemiro.”

Scholes also a huge Eriksen fan

While Christian Eriksen falls into a similar category to Fernandes, who is back on Real Madrid’s radar, Scholes thinks the Dane is a nice foil for Casemiro.

He added: “I love Christian Eriksen, I think he’s brilliant but a little bit more like me and just worried about the attacking side of things.

“Look, if me and Christian or Bruno played together, it could be 6-6 or 7-6. There could be any score.

“We’d concede a lot of goals but might score a few! Just having that added security of Casemiro.

“Like I said, Roy Keane, Nicky Butt, Michael Carrick could play the position perfectly and they’re the type of players I prefer to play with.”

Fernandes, Casemiro and Eriksen should all be back in action for United on December 21 when they take on Burnley in the Carabao Cup.
