Two successful transfers give Man Utd raid ‘serious’ chance of happening to force late Rangnick call
Manchester United centre-back Phil Jones has become the subject of a swoop by Bordeaux late in the transfer window, a report has claimed.
United have had a quiet January window so far, making no new signings amid the uncertainty over their manager situation. Instead, the Red Devils have focused on departures from Old Trafford.
Striker Anthony Martial has left on loan for Sevilla following his struggles for form and minutes. Axel Tuanzebe and Amad Diallo have also found new temporary homes at Napoli and Rangers, respectively.
United are likely to be even busier before Monday’s transfer deadline, too. Donny van de Beek and Jesse Lingard could leave for moves elsewhere in the Premier League.
According to L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), though, Jones is one player who could also leave the Red Devils.
Bordeaux have opened talks with United over a deal for the 29-year-old centre-back.
The Ligue 1 club have wanted to sign a new centre-back throughout the January transfer window. However, they had to shift players off their wage bill and squad to free up room.
And they have just done that. Brazilian defensive midfielder Otavio has gone to Atletico Miniero. Meanwhile, English forward Josh Maja is closing in on a loan move to Stoke with an option to buy.
Phil Jones a Bordeaux transfer option
As such, Jones has now emerged as a ‘serious’ transfer option for Bordeaux. He would be their second addition at the back this month after 34-year-old central defender Marcelo from Lyon.
Jones only recently came back into the fold following over 700 days without an appearance due to injury.
Nevertheless, he remains way down the United centre-back pecking order. Harry Maguire and last summer’s signing Raphael Varane are the club’s first-choice pairing.

Behind the duo, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are the chief competitors. As such, Jones could look to get his career back on track with a move across Europe in a new environment.
It remains unclear whether Bordeaux are targeting a loan or permanent transfer at this stage. It is also unclear whether Rangnick would sanction Jones’ exit, given he has already allowed fellow defender Tuanzebe to stay out on loan.
Report claims £15m fee
While Bordeaux are reportedly targeting a move for Jones, they may not yet be able to afford the player.
A report earlier in January claimed that United have put a £15million asking price on his services.
He has 18 months left on his contract. There is the option to extend that for a further year, though.
Nevertheless, he has struggled for minutes through injury and it remains unclear if the Red Devils will offer him a new deal.
