Big decision made on Phil Jones future as transfer oracle sheds light on Turkey move

Phil Jones Man Utd v Wolves

Manchester United are preparing for Phil Jones to remain at Old Trafford for the remainder of the season, after links with a move to Turkey were dismissed.

The experienced defender is now in his 11th season at Old Trafford, having arrived in a £16.5m deal from Blackburn in 2011. However, his time at Old Trafford has been riddled by a succession of injuries, the defender making just 225 appearances in that time. And during the last 18 months, Jones has just one Premier League appearance to his name.

As such, speculation linking him with a move away from the club has gathered pace in recent weeks. Indeed, Jones turned down two approaches from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux on Deadline Day.

It also emerged on Wednesday that Leicester were also considering a move for the former England man. An approach from Brendan Rodgers’ side, however, was not ultimately forthcoming.

But with the Turkish transfer window still open until February 8, reports are linking Jones with a move to Trabzonspor.

They are currently well clear at the top of the table in Turkey, but do have aspirations to make a splash in the Champions League.

And they reportedly saw Jones as a tool to help reinforce their credentials for next season.

No Trabzonspor move for Phil Jones

However, trusted transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has emphatically dismissed the rumours. He insists Trabzonspor have not been in touch with Jones, or his representatives.

As such, Romano claims United are fully expecting Jones to see out the season at Old Trafford. The club will then likely make a decision on his future then, with a parting of ways likely to be on the cards.

Phil Jones is contracted to United until summer 2023, though United do retain an additional one-year option on the player.

Rio Ferdinand critical of Jesse Lingard stagnation

Rio Ferdinand has criticised Jesse Lingard for his decision to stay at United last summer.

Lingard’s future has been the subject of many column inches during the January transfer window. Promised increased game time by then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the midfielder has played just 88 minutes of league football this term. The arrival of Ralf Rangnick has done nothing to improve his situation.

“I wouldn’t be happy if I was a player. It’s almost like he’s wasted a whole year of his career, a whole season of his career has been wasted,” Ferdinand said on his FIVE YouTube channel.

“He hasn’t played hardly any games, hasn’t been involved. Jesse Lingard went to West Ham and done fantastically well. Everyone would have wanted to take him outside of probably the top four… And then he goes back to Man United and doesn’t play.

“I was just baffled that he went back to Man United in the first place. After having that taste of success, that taste of playing every week.

“Either he was promised by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he’d get more game time. I don’t know what it was. And then this window you’d think he’d be doing all he can to get out.

“Maybe he took too long in getting to that point of wanting to leave. Did he ask to leave at the beginning of the window? Or did he make a decision later on in the window that he wanted to leave?

“But you look at his career and I just think the last year or two has just been wasted by just sticking around at Man United. He’s never going to play games. It’s just crazy.”
