Phil Jones could be offered Man Utd escape route by former teammate Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney is reportedly looking at making a summer move for former Manchester United teammate Phil Jones.
Following his departure from Derby County, Rooney has now taken charge of MLS outfit D.C United. Rooney played for the Washington-based club from 2018-2020, however, now joins the club for his second managerial position. And now, it seems he is already looking to make a mark on his new squad by adding a familiar face.
According to The Sun, Rooney wants former England defender Phil Jones to join his side this summer.
Jones made just four Premier League appearances last season, and is not expected to revive his career under Erik ten Hag.
The new boss is expected to add players to the squad, and is not likely to have included Jones in any future plans.
Jones has also not been included in the Man Utd pre-season squad travelling to the Far East and Australia. This is reportedly so the 30-year-old can work on his fitness ahead of the new season.
But Rooney could potentially offer Jones an escape route from Old Trafford. It is no secret that the new MLS boss is a fan of Jones.
When in charge of Derby, there was numerous rumours linking the club with a loan move for Jones. Nothing ever came to fruition, however, this time could be different.
If D.C United were to make a move, it is unlikely Man Utd would offer much of a fight to try keep Jones.
With one year remaining on his £100,000-a-week contract, the club could do with removing him from their books.
Phil Jones could revive career in MLS
It is undeniable that Jones has suffered a torrid time in his last couple of years with Man Utd.
A number of injuries has signifcantly affected his career, and many would argue he has never lived up to his potential.
However, a move to America could be exactly what Jones needs at this stage of his career.
Rooney could offer him regular first-team football – something he has not seen since the 2017/18 season.
At 30, the defender also has quite a few playing years left in him. If he can stay clear of injury, he could turn into one of the strongest defenders in the MLS division.
But given his history, D.C United would be taking a risk by signing him. Whether they decide to take this risk with Rooney as boss remains to be seen.
