Manchester United have made a new approach to sign Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, claims a report.
United identified the former Arsenal man as a target earlier in the month and registered their interest. The 33-year-old Gabon forward looks set to leave Barca this summer with Chelsea also in the hunt for him.
United though tried to sign the forward before he left Arsenal for the Camp Nou in January. The Sun then claimed he was back on United’s radar earlier this month.
And now, according to Gianluca di Marzio United are again hot on the forward’s trail.
Erik ten Hag is chasing a couple of attacking additions with the future of Cristiano Ronaldo unclear.
Chelsea were in the box seat for Aubameyang, but their move for the player has hit the rocks.
Thomas Tuchel is believed to be the main man driving the deal. The German coach is determined to be reunited with the player he had Borussia Dortmund.
But Chelsea’s efforts to bring Aubameyang to the club appear to have hit the buffers. The Sun claim the parties have not been able to come to an agreement over a contract at Stamford Bridge.
They suggest Aubameyang is looking for the security of a two-year deal to return to England
But at 33-years-old, the Blues are only willing to offer him an initial one-year deal. It’s a stance which they have employed previously. The club are reluctant to hand out longer deals to players over the age of 30.
Aubameyang chasing two-year contract
Chelsea are proposing a one-year deal with a potential second year if he impresses.
But thew striker reportedly wants a guarantee of a deal to 2024 up front. And with both parties unwilling to budge on their demands a deal is up in the air.
That has allowed United to move in with another approach for the player. Whether or not United would be prepared to offer Aubameyang the two-year deal that he wants remains to be seen.
But they signed Cristiano Ronaldo, 37, on a two-year deal last summer and Casemiro, 30, has just arrived on an initial four-year deal with an option of another year.
With time ticking down in the window United may have no other option but to offer Aubameyang the deal he wants.
