‘We will see’ – Pochettino opens up on PSG future with Man Utd, Tottenham waiting in the wings

Antonio Conte in discussion with Mauricio Pochettino

Manchester United target Mauricio Pochettino admits he still has unfinished business at Paris Saint-Germain but knows others control his future.

The 50-year-old took over the Parc des Princes reins in January 2021. He had been out of work for more than a year after being sacked by Tottenham in November 2019. The Argentinian was expected to continue the success the club enjoyed under previous boss Thomas Tuchel.

But it has not been a smooth ride for the ex-Southampton tactician. PSG failed to win the Ligue 1 title despite an abundance of talent in the squad.

Lille pipped them by one point in 2020-2021 although the Parisians are currently 15 points clear at the top of the table. However, Pochettino’s men failed to advance past the last 16 of the Coupe de France.

And it was a similar story in the Champions League. Despite taking a 1-0 lead into the second leg of their last-16 tie with Real Madrid, they went down 3-1 at the Bernabeu.

That saw the French giants crash out 3-2 on aggregate, with the capital press getting stuck into the manager and players.

PSG exited Europe’s premier club competition at the semi-final stage last season, when Manchester City proved too strong.

But the former Argentina international defender made it clear he is still up for the task of bringing the Champions League trophy to Paris.

“We are competitive by nature,” he told reporters. “This kind of challenge is an exciting one to take on. To give the possibility to fight again for this title, it’s exciting.

“Beyond the sadness, to give PSG the possibility to fight to fulfil their objectives is always a great challenge.”

Pochettino backs PSG for Euro glory

Pochettino guided his side to the Coupe de France title last term. But it is more prestigious silverware that the fans and owners crave.

The former Espanyol star is adamant he can deliver the goods as long as he has the right players at his disposal.

“And yes, we feel capable of it. Afterwards, it’s a question of exchanges,” he added. “We will have to sit down with the club to exchange. To find the best formula. To see the vision, the future, the ideas, the project.”

United will be in the market for a new permanent manager in the summer. Ralf Rangnick is in temporary charge but will step aside when the season is done.

Pochettino has been strongly linked to the Old Trafford post. However, a return to Spurs is not out of the question, according to Football Insider.

Reports emerged on Saturday that he is in regular contact with Daniel Levy and would jump at the chance to manage the club once again. The jury is still out on Antonio Conte’s future in north London.

And Pochettino did nothing to quell the rumours that his days in France may be numbered.

“We will analyse everything at the end of the season,” he continued. “We will see at the end of the season [if I stay]. It will be the club’s decision.”
