Ralf Rangnick has revealed he has not held any talks with Cristiano Ronaldo about his Manchester United future, but is expecting him to return for their match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United play at home to Tottenham on Saturday evening. They will be looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat in the derby to Manchester City. In that game, they were without influential forward Ronaldo, for reasons unclear.

It had been thought that he was injured, but doubts began to formulate over those theories. Meanwhile, there have been many reports about the Portugal international being unhappy and wanting to end his second spell with the club one year early.

But interim manager Rangnick, who will become a consultant in the summer, is yet to speak with Ronaldo about whether he is happy at the club.

Rangnick told a press conference (via the MEN): “He resumed for training yesterday. He trained the whole training session and I expect him to train today. I would’ve thought he was available tomorrow.

“I haven’t asked him if he’s happy at Manchester at this club. He’s fit again, resumed training yesterday and we shall see which formation we will line up with tomorrow.

Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly very unhappy at Manchester United as is looking for a new club with Juventus and Real Madrid returns not possible

“It doesn’t make sense to look back on what happened the last six or seven days. What is important is what happens tomorrow. Not to go through all this. He and Edi [Cavani] are both available for tomorrow.”

In addition to forwards Ronaldo and Cavani, defender Raphael Varane will also be back in contention.

However, Rangnick does not have a full selection available to him against Spurs. He has named Luke Shaw as one definite absentee and Scott McTominay as someone else who could miss out.

He confirmed: “Luke Shaw will miss out. Until yesterday, still testing positive for Covid.

“Scotty is a question mark, problems with his calf. Right now it’s more likely he will not be available because if we risk him tomorrow he might be out for the game on Tuesday (against Atletico Madrid). I tend to be careful if it’s a muscular injury.”

But even without two regular starters, Rangnick has been satisfied with what he has seen in training. He hopes it will serve them well in a critical match.

He said: “We are full aware of importance of tomorrow. We have to win that game, fully aware of that. We’ve had a good week of training.”
