Ralf Rangnick successor becomes clearer as number one Man Utd target ‘to leave’ in summer

Erik ten Hag, Mauricio Pochettino

Multiple reports claim Mauricio Pochettino will leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, with Manchester United a possible destination.

The 49-year-old has been in charge of PSG since January 2021. The Parisians are currently 11 points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 standings and likely to re-claim the title. Having replaced Thomas Tuchel in the Parc des Princes dugout, the Argentine was unable to land the French top-flight crown.

They finished behind surprise champions Lille but did manage to lift the Coupe de France trophy on May 19. Pochettino has been at PSG for just over a year but been constantly linked with other clubs.

His name was mentioned last summer as a possible permanent successor to Jose Mourinho at Tottenham. Daniel Levy opted for Nuno Espirito Santo but the Portuguese’s sacking saw Pochettino in the spotlight once again for a return.

That avenue was closed when Antonio Conte was handed the reins but he might not be done with English football just yet. Having cut his Premier League teeth at Southampton, the South American enjoyed five and a half years with Spurs.

He failed to land any silverware but did reach the Champions League final in 2018-2019. Links to Manchester United have been doing the rounds for some time.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure only ramped up the speculation that he will be at Old Trafford in the near future. Ralf Rangnick is only a temporary appointment and so the post will be vacant in the summer.

Cup loss the catalyst for exit reports

It was thought that Pochettino would remain with his present employers for many seasons. They look set to win the league and face Real Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League.

There have been rumours that he needs to win Europe’s top club competition to keep hold of his job. But Transfer News Live have tweeted that he will leave at the end of the season no matter what happens.

And Le Parisian back up those claims with a piece of their own regarding his summer exit. PSG crashed out of the Coupe de France on Monday night, with a 6-5 penalty shootout loss to Nice.

And that seems to have been the straw that broke the camel’s back as regards his future. The report adds that the French giants have already begun their search for his successor.

Man Utd manager Ralf Rangnick

United have reportedly been after the former Argentina defender for some time. And, if the rumours are true, their task just became considerably easier.
