Manchester United may be ahead of Arsenal in the pursuit of Christian Pulisic, as a former USA international has told him the Gunners might not be a “good fit”.
Pulisic’s future has been up in the air for a little while. Indeed, he seemed unhappy at the role he was playing at Stamford Bridge under Thomas Tuchel.
Last season, under the German, he started just 13 Premier League games. He was still able to score six times, as well as provide a couple of assists.
This season, before Tuchel’s sacking, the American made just a handful of league appearances. However, with the former manager being given the boot, it seemed Pulisic was ready to fight for his place in the side.
While he has been given a few appearances by Graham Potter in the league, only two have been from the start.
What’s more, one of those saw Pulisic play out of position, as a wing-back. A forward that has contributed to nearly 100 goals in around 250 games in his senior career seems much better suited up the pitch.
Indeed, his situation has not changed all too much since the frustrating period when Tuchel was at the helm.
Links away from the club have remained during this season, given Pulisic’s fringe role.
Pulisic told Arsenal is not right fit
Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle United are apparently ‘monitoring developments’ in his situation.
Furthermore, Chelsea are potentially ‘willing to sacrifice’ the American. That much makes sense, given they could make a decent fee for him.
The fee they are looking to raise has been reported as £35million.
Given there are three sides interested in him, Chelsea might well find one of them is willing to pay that sum.
However, one side could be in a much better position now. Former USA player Eric Wynalda has revealed one side would be a good fit and one wouldn’t.
“I’m not sure Arsenal as a destination is a good fit for Christian Pulisic. But I really like the idea of him going to Manchester United. With Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the club there will be a new vibe with that team,” he said via Metro.
Indeed, Arsenal are in a tremendous position at the moment. They are top of the Premier League, and their attackers are firing on all cylinders.
Regular attackers Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka have each scored five goals. As such, breaking into that attack seems unlikely.
While Jesus might be out injured for a little while, when he returns, he will likely be straight back in the mix. As such, if Pulisic were to join, he would likely be fulfilling the same role as he does at Chelsea, which he is not too fond of.
Smart United transfer possible
A move to United, though, could be much more likely. Ronaldo leaving has left just two strikers available to Erik ten Hag: Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.
As such, adding another attacker into the mix seems a smart plan. United might well sign a new striker, but Pulisic could be the better option.
He will be cheaper than a star striker. What’s more, Rashford could move to the centre more often to fulfil that role, and the American could play out wide.
