Man Utd respond to stunning Cristiano Ronaldo claims as shock suitor joins race and update suggests when exit idea formed

Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale by Manchester United despite his request to leave if an appropriate offer arrives, the club are reported to have briefed.

A stunning piece of news emerged on Saturday afternoon, when The Times revealed that Ronaldo has asked Manchester United to let him go if they receive a relevant offer.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner wants to keep playing in the Champions League, which Manchester United cannot offer him. Therefore, he would strongly consider an exit one year before his contract expires.

The Times‘ claims were soon backed up by other sources, such as Sky Sports, The Telegraph and The Athletic. The latter source has revealed there are three clubs who could sign Ronaldo: Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Napoli.

Chelsea are believed to have held talks with Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes. Bayern may be looking for a replacement for Robert Lewandowski if the striker leaves, despite already adding Sadio Mane.

The Napoli link is a new one and the most surprising of the lot. They are evolving their attack this summer, but few would have predicted they could be capable of landing Ronaldo, despite their involvement in the Champions League.

Still, they could try to take the former Juventus man back to Serie A in a move that would be as audacious as when they signed Diego Maradona in 1984. For now, though, they seem the least likely candidate to sign him.

But there could be plenty of drama surrounding Ronaldo regardless. However, The Athletic have also provided an update that Manchester United are saying he remains not for sale.

The PA news agency have also been told by a senior United source that that is the case. The club are expecting Ronaldo to fulfil his contract, having only returned one year ago.

Can Man Utd get Ronaldo back on side?

Whether they can make him happy again, though, is another matter. Ronaldo is said to be frustrated at their lack of ability to challenge for major honours.

Ronaldo isn’t going anywhere

Erik Ten Hag has said Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale after Chelsea boss Todd Boehly met with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes to discuss the possibility of a deal.

In fact, it has even been reported by the Daily Mirror that he already wanted out in January, just six months after signing for his second spell with the club.

He feels let down by the way United have failed to progress since he returned to the fold. However, he was talked out of a winter exit to avoid creating a drama.

Now, there is certainly one brewing. It is going to be very interesting to see what happens with the 37-year-old this summer.
