Man Utd rival Chelsea in UCL finalist chase as Ten Hag sweats over star who could leave

Andre Onana, Lautaro Martinez, Inter Milan, June 2023

Manchester United are reportedly rivalling Chelsea for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, as David de Gea may still leave this summer.

The goalkeeper position is one that could become very important for United this summer. Things are up in the air regarding who will be between the sticks at the start of next season.

That’s largely due to the contract situation of incumbent keeper De Gea. Indeed, after having won the Premier League golden glove this season, his deal will run out this summer.

And while negotiations are reportedly ongoing, as yet, it’s unclear whether or not he will remain.

While a report on June 8 stated he’d snub a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia in order to stay at Old Trafford, there have been no signs yet that that will definitely happen.

There might be a new man in net even if the Spaniard does stay. Indeed, another recent report stated United would attempt to sign Jordan Pickford ‘whether De Gea leaves or not’.

United have options other than Pickford, too. Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa is reportedly on the shortlist, so too is David Raya, though Tottenham look the more likely of the two sides to complete that particular snare.

They’d also been in contact with Anderlecht over young goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but Fabrizio Romano suggests Brighton are moving into a great position regarding that move.

Man Utd rival Chelsea for Onana

They’ve now seemingly moved their attention onto Inter Milan goalkeeper Onana.

The Guardian reports they are giving competition to Chelsea for the snare. The Blues have been in the mix for a little while, with the report suggesting they’ll listen to offers for both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy.

United, meanwhile, are apparently sweating over De Gea. Indeed, The Guardian cites his inconsistency of late as a reason that the Red Devils are hoping for a new stopper.

That his contract situation is still up in the air is also mentioned. Both of those factors give good reason to United’s pursuit of a new star in net.

Onana ticks United boxes

Onana seems to tick a lot of the boxes that United want in their goalkeeper. Indeed, mistakes have become a part of De Gea’s game this season due to him lacking skills in certain areas.

The report suggests United’s interest in Onana is driven by the fact he is better in those areas.

He’s said to be good with his feet, and also impressed during Inter’s run to the Champions League final. Indeed, he kept eight clean sheets in 13 games in Europe’s elite competition.

He’s also 27, which is relatively young for a goalkeeper, so could play a starring role for United for years to come.

Inter seem to be sweating over the future of the no.1. Indeed, the report states they ‘fear they will lose’ him, and have as such enquired about Brentford man Raya.

With that being said, United could be in with a good shot of completing the deal.
