Man Utd to submit improved Frenkie de Jong bid as Ten Hag eyes four further deals

Frenkie de Jong, Netherlands May 2022

Manchester United are reportedly readying a second bid for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, among a few other potential moves this summer.

United will be keen on elevating themselves back to the elite of the Premier League and Europe. Indeed, they slipped well below their standards last season, finishing sixth.

Recruiting well under new manager Erik ten Hag will be an important factor. The Dutchman will be keen on shaping the squad to his liking, and bringing in some genuine quality.

United have been linked with a number of big names, as is often the case during the transfer window.

One man they have put the wheels in motion to sign is Barca midfielder De Jong. However, their attempts have proved futile to this point.

Indeed, the Red Devils’ initial approach of £51.64million was rebuffed by the Spanish side. Barcelona do not want to suffer a major loss on De Jong, who they signed for a reported £77.4million just three years ago.

As such, United will need to improve their offer, and that is seemingly what they are planning on doing.

Manchester Evening News reports that United sources say they are “negotiating hard” for a fair deal for De Jong.

As well as the Dutchman, United have other avenues they are looking to explore. There are three more named players on their shortlist: Christian Eriksen, Antony, and Daniel Bachmann.

United are also apparently in the market for a centre-back, though the report does not name who that might be.

De Jong potentially a top signing

Should United pull it off, then signing De Jong seems a great piece of business. The midfielder has been a top player at Barcelona during his three seasons there.

His impact on both sides of the ball will be a bonus for United, as well as his eye for a pass.

With Paul Pogba having moved on, adding quality to the midfield will be vital. De Jong fits the bill perfectly, as he can play in an advanced role, box-to-box, or defensive.

At just 25 years of age, De Jong could be a top asset for years to come. He has already made 43 appearances for the Netherlands, and will surely make many more.

While he is already a top player, he could help turn United back into one of the biggest sides in the world, should his skills transfer from Spain to England, which is likely.
