Report reveals two issues Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had with resurgent Anthony Martial before Man Utd axe

Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reported to have had two issues with Anthony Martial throughout his time in charge at Old Trafford.

The France international striker has been heavily linked with an exit this summer. However, continuing doubts over Cristiano Ronaldo’s future and Martial’s impressive pre-season form has culminated in a complete U-turn from United.

Martial has notched three times in as many games during their club’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

The 26-year-old, who found the target against Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace, is now primed to stay.

The onus will now be on Erik ten Hag to get the best out of Martial in the Premier League, something that he has struggled with.

And according to The Athletic, Solskjaer had two problems with the forward when he was at the helm.

The report states that the Norwegian ‘got frustrated at his [Martial’s] communication away from Carrington’.

Solskjaer was also said to be unhappy at ‘Martial’s mobility off the ball’, with the striker ‘rarely busting a gut to retrieve possession’.

Despite all that, Martial arguably displayed his best form during Solskjaer’s time in charge.

He notched 23 goals during the disrupted 2019/2020 campaign, but his confidence has always appeared brittle.

Martial place constantly under threat

United have not helped in that regard, however, by bringing in three high-profile names to challenge him.

Martial was known to be unhappy at having to give up his No.9 shirt when Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived in 2016.

Edinson Cavani then arrived from PSG and took game time away from the Frenchman. And the return of United legend Cristiano Ronaldo was probably the final straw for Martial.

Ronaldo’s arrival, and the fact that Cavani was still on board, eventually saw the striker shipped off to Sevilla on loan.

That move proved to be a disastrous one, with not a single LaLiga goal to his name.

However, Martial appears to have a renewed vigour ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The attacker has looked sharp and full of purpose in pre-season. And he appears to be intent of making the most of Ronaldo’s current stand-off with the club.

The Red Devils are next in action on Saturday when they take on Aston Villa in Perth.

Their Premier League campaign gets underway with a home clash against Brighton on August 7.
