Man Utd report: Huge Perth crowd sees Jadon Sancho shine but United pegged back late on in Villa draw

Manchester United’s winning pre-season run came to an end in Perth as they squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Erik ten Hag’s men had won three in a row prior to Saturday and went two goals up through the impressive Jadon Sancho and a Matty Cash own goal. However, goals from Leon Bailey and Calum Chambers earned Villa a deserved share of the spoils.

Luke Shaw and Donny van de Beek came into the United side for Tyrell Malacia and Scott McTominay, as Erik ten Hag once again named a strong starting XI.

There were some boos again for Harry Maguire as the teams were read out on the big screen in Perth.

But the United skipper came close to silencing some of his critics early on. However, his powerful header from a corner was met by a tremendous save by Emi Martinez.

But after Cash went close for Villa, United took the lead in the 24th minute through the lively Sancho.

The England winger was on target after a fine team move involving Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw down the left, volleying home from close range.

Sancho was involved again as Ten Hag’s men doubled their advantage just before the break when his teasing cross hit Cash and deflected past Martinez.

Villa boss second-half in Perth

Villa pulled a goal back in the 50th minute when Victor Lindelof stood off Bailey and allowed the forward to find the bottom corner of David de Gea’s goal.

A poor second period, in which the woeful pitch played a part, prompted Ten Hag to make 10 changes to his side in the 68th minute. Indeed, only De Gea kept his place in the side.

The likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphael Varane, Eric Bailly, Alex Telles, Tyrell Malacia and Anthony Elanga were all introduced into the action.

Villa largely bossed the second period and came close to drawing level when Douglas Luiz’s dangerous cross late on failed to find a teammate.

However, Steven Gerrard’s men were on level terms in stoppage-time when Chambers headed home a Bailey corner.

The result ended United’s winning run in pre-season in front of 58,228 fans in Perth.

Next up for the Red Devils is a clash with Atletico Madrid on July 30, while Villa take on Stade Rennes on the same day.
