Richard Keys savages Ten Hag over Man Utd signing and reveals ‘horrible feeling’ over transfer

Manchester United have been warned they could have traded down by replacing David De Gea with Andre Onana after Richard Keys suggested the move was a huge gamble by Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils finally wrapped up the signing of the Cameroon keeper in a €50m (£43.3m) from Inter Milan this week following a series of lengthy negotiations.

The capture of Onana, regarded as one of the world’s best in his position, saw Ten Hag reunite with his former Ajax stopper. His ability to play with the ball with his feet, advance from his goal and quickly help United up the field will add a new dimension to their play.

Indeed, all the top teams today boast keepers who are quality ballers too. To that end, Ederson, Alisson Becker, Jordan Pickford and David Raya lead the way in the Premier League.

Onana certainly compares to any of the best, though, as Rio Ferdinand points out, with Onana often coming yards out of his goal, the signing will come with plenty of risks.

Assessing what he will add to the United mix, a delighted Ten Hag revealed why he is so happy to reunite with the 27-year-old.

“Most important, always for a keeper, is clean sheets and he’s not doing that on his own,” Ten Hag stated.

“Therefore, you need a very good defensive organisation, it’s quite clear. But also the capabilities of a keeper is about keeping the goal clean. So this is the first criterion of a good goalkeeper.”

Ten Hag continued: “Nowadays, football also demands good playing from the back, out-playing qualities, and that is a quality Andre has. You need both and you need to cover both areas. So yeah, we’re happy, of course.

“I think with his physical presence and also with his personality, he is so keen on winning. He’s so, so eager to win trophies and he will help the team and he will help the squad to get to higher levels.”

Andre Onana signing comes with Richard Keys warning

Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys, however, is far from convinced.

And he has explained why the decision to let De Gea leave as a free agent and then spend £43.3m on his replacement is a huge risk.

Furthermore, he claims he has a horrible feeling United could regret the move.

“I’ve got a horrible feeling this guy will cost United as many points in a season as De Gea used to save. This is a big call by Ten Hag,” he tweeted.

Analysing Onana’s performance in the UCL final, which they lost 1-0 to Manchester City, Steven Gerrard also made an amusing quip about Onana’s tendancy to come charging out of goal.

“He could wear number 10 on his back, he’s like Ederson.” Gerrard told BT Sport.

“All night he’s getting pressed, under pressure, sticky situations he’s just calm and collected. He can play long, he can play short, left, right, I loved watching the keeper tonight I thought he was fantastic.”

Onana himself has already made clear his ambitions at Old Trafford.

“Now I really want to start this new experience, it’s exciting and with a coach who for me is a master,” he said. “I will go to a great league and a great club, which has a huge history just like that of Inter: I will start from scratch and give everything every day to show the new fans who I am.”

He then added: “Personally, I hope to win the Champions League with United.”
