Keane unleashes scathing rant at two Man Utd stars – ‘I give up on these players’

Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire are downbeat as Bernardo Silva celebrates his goal for Manchester City vs United, November 2021

Roy Keane unleashed a scathing rant at two Manchester United stars for their poor defending in the defeat to Manchester City.

United suffered yet another loss at the hands of their neighbours. Pep Guardiola’s side were totally dominant at Old Trafford and took a two goal lead into the break thanks to Bernardo Silva’s strike on the stroke of half-time.

The Portugal international was allowed to get in behind by Luke Shaw before his effort was fumbled into his own net by David de Gea.

On the goal, Keane told Sky Sports: “This defending, Shaw and De Gea, no, not enough pressure.

“It’s ok sitting back in but when you get to this area you’ve got to have intensity, you’ve got to put pressure.

“You’ve got to realise it’s half-time, you’re on the ropes, stay in the game. You’re like a boxer, stay in the game. Look at Shaw and de Gea, what chance have you got in this game?

“I’ve been crossing these fellas for years. I give up. I give up on these players. Right on half-time, these are international football players.

“I can’t understand the defending. I give up. I’m driving down here thinking ‘Man United are at home, they’ve got a chance’.

“But they’ve been like this all season giving up chances. Unless United do something drastic it’ll be another four or five.”

Keane’s worst fears weren’t realised but City cruised to victory in the second half, dominating possession and having a further six attempts on goal compared to United’s two.

A head injury forced Shaw off through midway through the half. Alex Telles replaced him as concussion substitute.

Guardiola’s side sit six points ahead of their rivals, who could now slip down the Premier League table with most teams still to play.

United transfer called into question

Meanwhile, former City defender Danny Mills has claimed Jadon Sancho should be questioning his decision to move to United.

Sancho came on at half-time of the match, replacing Eric Bailly who had scored an own goal to give City the lead.

When asked if Sancho will be regretting it, Mills told Football Insider: “Without a doubt, he’ll have to question it. ‘Did I make the right decision?’

“‘What was I told about signing for Man United and has that materialised?’ The answer has to be no, at the moment, it certainly hasn’t.”
