Ruben Neves ‘really appreciated’ by Man Utd as potential alternative to Frenkie de Jong

Ruben Neves remains “really appreciated” by Manchester United as they weigh up their options if they can’t sign Frenkie de Jong, it has been claimed.

De Jong is Manchester United’s top target for the summer transfer window. He would strengthen their midfield, an area that has been depleted recently. Such a move would represent a reunion with his former Ajax coach, Erik ten Hag.

De Jong’s current club, Barcelona, have been worrying about having to sell a star player. The Dutchman has been the one most likely to be sacrificed.

However, his stance on a move to Manchester United has not been the most enthusiastic. Besides, Barcelona may be able to keep him after all, with a bit of work.

With that in mind, Man Utd must be keeping in mind other players to strengthen an area that has lost the likes of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.

In that regard, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that they could still be keeping tabs on Wolves star Neves.

Romano told Give Me Sport: “I’m sure they have some alternatives.

“Ruben Neves is a player that last summer was already on the list. He’s always been on the list of Manchester United and is really appreciated.”

Neves is emerging from his fifth season with Wolves and fourth as a Premier League player. During the 2021-22 campaign, he made 33 top-flight appearances and scored four goals.

Coincidentally, the Portugal international has also been linked with Barcelona themselves. But United are believed to be in a better position to make a good offer to Wolves, despite their lack of Champions League football and Neves’ apparent preference for Barca.

Ruben Neves can step up but will it be to Man Utd?

At the age of 25, Neves has given good service to Wolves but has earned a bigger platform. Where next for the former Porto man remains to be seen.

United could be a good move for him. He would be a regular starter there and could continue in the Premier League, where he had no struggles adapting after Wolves’ promotion from the Championship at the end of his first season.

Obviously, a club like Barcelona and a division like La Liga will have their own allure. Therefore, he could give them consideration too.

But if Barcelona are able to keep De Jong, perhaps Neves would be better off taking a leading role at Man Utd. Maybe their futures will be intertwined in the coming weeks.
