Man Utd trump Barcelona with higher Ruben Neves bid, as replacement signing hinges on Wolves sale

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves

Man Utd have tabled a higher bid than Barcelona for Wolves ace Ruben Neves and the Portuguese press have shed light on the midfielder’s preferred destination.

The Red Devils are known to be on the hunt for midfield reinforcements this summer. Paul Pogba’s exit has already been confirmed by the club, while Nemanja Matic previously announced he will seek a new challenge.

That leaves just Fred, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek and potentially James Garner and Andreas Pereira on the books. Clearly, upgrades must be signed to kick the Erik ten Hag era off in style.

Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong remains United’s top midfield target. The Guardian recently claimed United’s opening bid totalling £60m was rejected and the latest on that front can be found here.

Should Man Utd sign De Jong, one player Barcelona are interested in signing as his successor is Ruben Neves.

But according to the Portuguese press, United too are moving for the 25-year-old and have reportedly lodged a higher bid than Barca.

That is the news coming from O Jogo whose report is relayed by Sport Witness.

Wolves move reliant on Ruben Neves sale first

It’s claimed Wolves have ‘received an offer from Manchester United‘ for Ruben Neves. The size of the bid isn’t stated, though they’re adamant it’s a more advantageous offer from Wolves’ perspective than what Barcelona have tabled.

That would suggest either the total figure is higher, or United are prepared to pay a higher portion of the fee up front.

Wolves are stated to have lined up Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Palhinha as Neves’ direct replacement. However, signing the 26-year-old hinges on Neves being sold first.

From Neves’ perspective, it’s stated he would prefer a move to the Camp Nou over Old Trafford. He may have a say in his direction of travel, but so too will Wolves and if United’s offer really is more lucrative, it could be decisive.

Could United sign De Jong and Neves?

There has been talk of James Garner being given a chance to impress in pre-season. The youngster excelled on loan at Nottingham Forest last year, though whether he is ready to be a regular in the Premier League is another matter entirely and another loan spell could be sanctioned.

Andreas Pereira could be axed despite his permanent move to Flamengo breaking down. If both he and Garner were to leave, United would need two midfield additions.

Neves and De Jong would add class and creativity in an area United have fallen far behind their rivals. What’s more, Neves is Premier League proven and thus would not require a bedding in period.

Wolves appear increasingly resigned to losing their star man this summer and United look a great fit on paper.

What’s more, the latest reports claim they’re ready to let Liverpool sign Darwin Nunez, meaning there’ll be cash freed up to spend elsewhere.
