Man Utd told to ruin Tottenham deal for ‘best player in the world’ in his position, as Chelsea ruled out of running

Manchester United have been urged to submit a record-breaking bid for England striker Harry Kane amid Tottenham’s hopes of tying him down to a new contract.

Kane’s current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expires in June 2024. As such, Tottenham are at risk of having to sell him this summer, should he reveal he desire to leave in search of trophies.

Luckily for Spurs, it seems Kane could renew and continue his brilliant legacy with the north London side.

On Monday, David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed the goalscorer to be ‘open’ to agreeing fresh terms at Spurs. Despite the obvious lure of winning silverware with a different team, he is focused on the club and wants to help them win that trophy they have been desperate for.

Kane broke his silence on the reports during an interview with the Evening Standard. He said there hadn’t been much talk of a new deal just yet, though he expects there to be ‘conversations over the coming months’. He added that he ‘still wants to win trophies for Tottenham Hotspur’.

Despite there now being a possibility of Kane extending his spell at Spurs, pundit Paul Merson has urged Erik ten Hag to sign the 29-year-old for Man Utd.

Merson believes Kane is ‘the best centre-forward in the world’ and that Man Utd should break their transfer record by launching a £100m bid for him.

“Is Harry Kane going to go for individual records or is he going to go for medals? I don’t see him winning anything at Tottenham,” the former Arsenal player wrote in his column for Sky Sports.

Harry Kane must choose between individual accolades or trophies

“He’s going to beat Jimmy Greaves’ goalscoring record, which is a phenomenal feat. He’s got a chance of beating Alan Shearer’s Premier League record at Tottenham.

“Tottenham have been good to Kane at the same time as Kane’s been good to Tottenham. He’s got kids, he’s married – he’s got to play where he’s happy. Would you want to change all that?

“He’s the best centre-forward in the world. If I’m Manchester United, I’m spending £100m on Kane tomorrow. They just paid £80m for Antony and he won’t score as many goals in 10 years as Kane would score in a season for Man Utd.

“Kane can play until he’s 37 because he doesn’t have to have pace – his game’s not about pace. He’s got the brain, he can come short, find the passes and score the goals. He has everything.

“If Man Utd want to be anywhere near winning a title, they need a Kane. Seeing them against Arsenal, they’re a long way off still.”

Merson then explained why Kane should never go to Spurs’ London rivals Chelsea.

“Kane to Chelsea? That can’t happen,” he added. “If he comes to Chelsea, he loses his legacy at Tottenham. Tottenham fans would go mad. For him to go over to Chelsea, it would be the next notch down from going to Arsenal. Chelsea and Tottenham don’t get on.”

This is not the first time Merson has told Man Utd to prioritise a move for Kane. Earlier this month, he recommended they ‘break the bank’ to take Kane to Old Trafford. He cannot believe that Man Utd are looking all around the world for a new striker, when the perfect option is ‘staring everybody in the face’.

Ten Hag would surely love to have Kane in his squad. After all, he guarantees goals, assists and brilliant hold up play.

But a transfer is less likely to happen now Kane has revealed his desire to remain at Spurs.

As such, Man Utd may have to look for alternative options. But they could end up keeping Wout Weghorst as the Dutchman has spoken about his future plans.
