Man Utd transfer news: Scott McTominay learns fate from Ten Hag as two Prem clubs show hand in wake of De Jong deal

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has told Scott McTominay exactly where his future lies amid claims two Premier League clubs are in contact over his potential signing.

The Red Devils manager is busy trying to assemble what he hopes will be a much more competitive squad this season. Under the leadership of first Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick, United only managed to saunter home in sixth. To be brutally honest, far too many of their leading stars under-performed.

As such, it’s little wonder to see Ten Hag seeking to improve all areas of his side. With links to several top-quality players, it promises to be a busy summer for United.

The top priority for Ten Hag was the recruitment of a world-class midfielder. United lost control of too many games in the middle of the park last season. As a result, the club are closing in on the big-money signing of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona. Ahead of his move, he has held a chat with Ten Hag over what role he can expect to fulfil at United.

They are not stopping there either, with Ten Hag also eyeing a second stellar midfield addition, as per Wednesday’s Transfer Gossip.

With potentially two new midfielders arriving, speculation is rising that McTominay may be shown the door.

Newcastle among those keen

The homegrown star has been a regular feature in the United side since debuting in April 2017. In the five seasons since, he has clocked up 170 appearances, scoring 16 times.

However, there has remained question marks over whether he quite has the ability to take United to the next level.

And reported interest from Newcastle and one other unnamed Premier League club suggests his time could be up.

However, the Daily Mirror reports that Ten Hag has told McTominay he is going nowhere. The Scotland international is seen as a ‘pivotal’ member of United’s squad. And all offers for him this summer will be rebuffed.

And while he may no longer be an automatic choice, he will still clock up plenty of minutes under Ten Hag.

The player is due to report back for pre-season training on July 2, having been given an extended break over the summer.

Scott McTominay still important to United

The reassurance from Ten Hag will be exactly what the 25-year-old star needs. His potential was recognised early by Jose Mourinho, while Solskjaer was also a big fan of the Lancaster-born star.

There is always that element of doubt when a new manager comes in and seeing players targeted for your position is never a good sign.

But McTominay now looks likely to play a big part this coming season as the Ten Hag regime gets underway. With Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba all leaving, United’s midfield is lighter than last season.

As such, the player, alongside his partner in crime, Fred, will still likely get minutes.

Erik Ten Hag expects Frenkie De Jong to complete Manchester United move

Manchester United manager expects Frenkie De Jong to complete move from Barcelona this summer, but why?

Scott McTominay can fulfil a variety of midfield roles for United. He can sit deep and dictate the play from the back. Or he can play in advanced midfield role. Indeed, his eye for goal is best exemplified by his two-goal display against Leeds in 2020/21.

Either way, he will be pleased to know he figures in Ten Hag’s plans and that his sale is not under consideration.

United, meanwhile, are closing in on the signing of Tyrell Malacia, with a bargain deal of just £13m reportedly nearing.
