Major star considering quitting Man Utd, as chances of move to Prem rival soar after brutal Ten Hag intervention

A senior Man Utd star is weighing up whether to leave Old Trafford in the wake of a chastening decision made by Erik ten Hag, and a move within the Premier League has been touted.

It was truly a season to forget for Harry Maguire who quickly fell out of favour under Erik ten Hag. Indeed, it took the Dutchman just two games – both of which were defeats – before Ten Hag axed Maguire from his starting eleven.

The Raphael Varane-Lisandro Martinez pairing was preferred and the duo quickly struck up a fine understanding.

In the event Varane missed out, Victor Lindelof generally got the nod ahead of Maguire. If the left-footed Martinez was absent, it was left-back Luke Shaw who was selected to play out of position at the heart of defence.

The end result saw Maguire rack up just 759 minutes of Premier League action.

Varying outlets including the Manchester Evening News and ESPN have confirmed Man Utd will listen to offers for Maguire this summer. Mail Plus previously reported United are fully aware they’ll have to settle for no more than half the fee paid to Leicester (£80m) back in 2019.

Until now, all outlets have reported Maguire would love nothing more than to remain at Old Trafford and fight for his place.

However, in the immediate aftermath of being stripped of the club captaincy, Sky Sports suggest Maguire is mulling a change of heart.

Indeed, Maguire confirmed via social media he’d been relieved of the armband earlier on Sunday following talks with Ten Hag.

The Dutchman is yet to name Maguire’s successor, though the odds-on favourite is Bruno Fernandes who has been vice-captain for the last two seasons.

In the wake of Maguire’s demotion, Sky Sports reporter, Dharmesh Sheth, revealed Maguire is now considering his options moving forward.

Among his options are West Ham who have money to spend following Declan Rice’s £105m move to Arsenal. Per Sheth and Sky Sports’ information, a transfer away is no longer out of the question for Maguire.

“We understand he’s considering all [of] his options after having the captaincy removed by the manager,” said Sheth.

“His situation is being monitored closely by a number of Premier League clubs, and a number of clubs in Europe as well, including West Ham.”

Sheth concluded by doubling down on the claim Maguire is considering “all” of his options, before namechecking West Ham once again.

Per the reporter, the Hammers hold a confirmed interest in signing the England international “this summer.”

A follow-up on Sky’s website revealed the Hammers are exploring both a loan or permanent move for the centre-back.

However, they are acutely aware Maguire’s lofty salary (worth roughly £200,000-a-week) could pose a problem if he’s unwilling to take a sizeable pay-cut.

England ambitions could sway Maguire?

Factoring into Maguire’s thinking will no doubt be his starting role for England.

Euro 2024 is less than a year away and remaining rooted to the bench for a second straight season could see England boss Gareth Southgate pull the trigger.

John Stones is a virtual lock to start for the Three Lions and to date, so too has been Maguire.

However, with the highly-regarded Levi Colwill on the rise and potentially in line for a chance to impress at Chelsea this season, Maguire’s starting spot at left centre-half will come under intense scrutiny if barely featuring at club level.

If Sky’s information is correct, Maguire is now beginning to realise his future may lay away from Man Utd in the aftermath of having the captaincy stripped.
