Man Utd star leaves Ten Hag stunned by going above manager and telling board he wants to ‘quit’ club

Erik ten Hag has been left shocked after a Manchester United player reportedly told the club’s board of directors that he wants to leave this summer.

There look set to be some big changes at Man Utd in the summer. Ten Hag is aiming to completely revamp his striker options, with Anthony Martial in line to be sold. Loanee Wout Weghorst could join the club on a permanent deal as his replacement, although Man Utd will still need to sign a world-class goalscorer as well. Harry Kane is thought to be Ten Hag’s ideal signing, but there is also interest in Napoli star Victor Osimhen and Benfica ace Goncalo Ramos.

Midfield is another position that could be added to in the summer. Ian Wright has praised loanee Marcel Sabitzer, and he is certainly under consideration for a long-term move. But Ten Hag also likes the look of Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister and Southampton skipper James Ward-Prowse.

Man Utd signing a new midfielder could have big consequences. According to Football Insider, Scott McTominay has told the club he will push for an exit in the summer if they bring in a new player in his position, and that is exactly what Ten Hag is hoping to do.

The report claims that McTominay has actually gone above his manager’s head and straight to the Man Utd board. He does not want to fall further down the pecking order and has decided he will ‘quit’ the club if a new midfielder joins.

The Scotland international is heading towards his peak years and wants to be playing regular football in the Premier League, rather than warming the bench. He apparently views the signing of another midfielder as a ‘huge threat’ to his game time and career as a whole.

McTominay’s decision comes after Man Utd signed Casemiro and Christian Eriksen last summer, as well as Sabitzer in January.

McTominay, 26, has still managed 34 appearances across all competitions this campaign. But not all of these have been starts, with Ten Hag often bringing the player off the bench to replace one of his first-choice midfielders.

Scott McTominay could find new club

This is a big decision from McTominay. He has been on Man Utd’s books for all of his senior career, having graduated from their academy in 2017.

McTominay will be very comfortable at Man Utd as he knows the club so well. However, he seems to be putting his career first and could therefore gain a transfer at the end of the season.

Teams lower down the Premier League table will be on alert after finding out about McTominay’s exit decision. Although, he could actually end up rivalling Man Utd for top-four finishes in the future.

Various sources have put the 38-cap international on Newcastle United’s radar. Eddie Howe is thought to be a big fan of McTominay and is hoping to take him to St James’ Park.

Newcastle already have strong midfield options, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock available to Howe.

But McTominay will have more confidence about getting into Newcastle’s starting eleven than Man Utd’s, especially as Ten Hag does not seem to rate him as highly as Howe.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Man Utd have held talks over a £31m Bundesliga capture.
