Man Utd start Mason Greenwood experiment as source confirms three potential destinations for striker

Manchester United could send Mason Greenwood out on loan for the entire 2023-24 campaign before deciding what to do with the forward on a permanent basis, according to a report.

Greenwood has been suspended by Man Utd ever since he was arrested on suspicion of rape and other related offences in January 2022. However, those charges were dropped in February of this year due to the withdrawal of witnesses and new material emerging. Greenwood’s future has been debated ever since the charges were dropped.

Man Utd have been conducting an internal investigation to see whether the 21-year-old should play for them ever again. It was recently reported that a final verdict is close to being released.

The Daily Mail have now provided their information on the situation. They state that the Red Devils have ‘stepped up’ their investigation into Greenwood ever since Erik ten Hag’s men played their final game of the campaign.

If club chiefs find Greenwood brought the club’s name into disrepute, then they will terminate his contract early. Alternatively, Man Utd may decide to complete the review and send him on loan for a season to allow them an extra period of ‘reflection’.

It is suggested that Man Utd might conduct an experiment by shipping Greenwood off to a European side for next season. If such a transfer were to go through, then Man Utd would monitor public reaction to the Englishman still playing at professional level. They would also keep tabs on Greenwood’s mental health and performance levels.

In terms of where Greenwood could go next, the Mail claim clubs from Italy, Spain and Turkey are showing interest in him. There is no mention of exactly which teams they are, although previous reports have named Juventus, Milan and Roma as potential suitors.

A move to Roma would see Greenwood play alongside compatriots Chris Smalling and Tammy Abraham. Roma could probably do with landing a new centre-forward after Abraham had to undergo knee surgery. He will be out until around November to December.

Mason Greenwood could reunite with former Man Utd boss

Joining Roma would also see Greenwood reunite with Jose Mourinho, who was in charge just as the attacker was on the cusp of breaking into the Man Utd first team.

Greenwood, who has played for the England national team once, has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have been tipped to hijack Man Utd’s move for Ten Hag’s ‘main’ transfer target.
