Struggling Man Utd forward given Ten Hag backing as Fabrizio Romano reveals Everton transfer truths

Insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed there was interest in a loan for Anthony Elanga in the summer, but United opted against shipping him out.

Elanga became one of United’s most called upon assets at one point last season. Indeed, the winger made 27 appearances in all competitions.

His most important contribution was a late equaliser off the bench in the first leg of United’s Champions League last-16 game against Atletico Madrid.

That goal on its own likely afforded Elanga more game time. Indeed, he was elevated to the starting XI for the next leg, when the Red Devils were ultimately knocked out.

Across all of his senior appearances during the last campaign, Elanga scored three goals, as well as assisting two.

A change of personnel this season has meant for a change in his role. Indeed, the big changes were, of course, the manager, and the addition of Antony, who operates in the same areas as Elanga.

That has meant the Swede has started just five games in all competitions so far. He is yet to score in those appearances, and has registered just one assist.

It would appear that he is a less important part in Erik ten Hag’s plans than he was in Ralf Rangnick’s.

Romano reveals Elanga backing

However, that may not be the case. Transfer insider Romano has revealed that while there was interest in Elanga in the summer, with Eveton the side who came calling.

However, United and Ten Hag decided to snub that offer by keeping him around.

“There was some interest in a potential loan deal in August but Man United decided to keep him,” he said on Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing.

That points to the fact that Ten Hag is keen on the winger. He would not have kept him around if he didn’t think he could offer something to the side.

The fact Elanga has started games with the likes of Antony and Marcus Rashford to compete with reinforces that. However, it would be a struggle for anybody to play consistently with those talents ahead of them.

Romano details Elanga potential

There is obviously potential in Elanga, which is clearly seen by those at United. Romano feels that he should be getting more game time, to reflect that.

“I think Elanga really needs to play more,” he said.

“At the moment the situation is quiet; but in my personal opinion, he deserves to play more as he has an incredible potential.”

Indeed, opportunities will likely come more often in the season. After a 3-1 loss to Aston Villa, Ten Hag could well decide to switch things up and start players who do not do so often.

All Elanga can do is perform when given the opportunity.
