Tahith Chong has revealed his ambitions as well as conversations he has had with Manchester United ahead of the arrival of Erik ten Hag at the club.
Chong has played 16 times for Manchester United across all competitions. The 22-year-old has been seen as one of United’s most exciting prospects for some time.
Of course, youth development has been a major factor in United’s success for years. The Old Trafford outfit have a lengthy record of including academy graduates in their squads.
The likes of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard have been some of the more successful academy graduates in recent years. Chong will want to follow the same path as those stars.
The winger has been out on loan at three different sides since 2020. Indeed, United clearly want to give him a good taste of first-team football.
His latest loan period has been with Birmingham City. The winger has played 19 times, either side of an injury, and has contributed to four goals.
Clearly, Chong has ambitions of fully breaking into United’s first team. The youngster has now mentioned conversations he has had with the club of late.
“They have lifted the option in my contract, they see all my matches, and in the talks I’ve had with Darren Fletcher, technical director, it appears that they are satisfied with my development,” he told Voetbal International.
“They also really want me to rejoin them in the preparation for next season.”
With Ten Hag at the helm, youth stars may be given a bigger opportunity at Old Trafford, as they have been at Ajax.
The new manager will want to assess the players at his disposal when he arrives at the club. Chong could be a good option for the manager, and being Dutch cannot hurt his chances.
Chong has big Man Utd ambitions
Chong appears to have big ambitions with his boyhood club, something he also mentioned.
“Always with the thought: succeed at Manchester United,” he said.
“If that does not work, then it must be at the highest level for me. What this is, will then have to be seen.”
Chong has shown his talent in United’s youth sides, and out on loan.
He will hope that he is soon able to do the same in the first team.
