Man Utd takeover: Glazers tipped to keep Red Devils stake if Sir Jim Ratcliffe bid is successful

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is offering a takeover deal that would enable Joel and Avram Glazer to maintain a stake in Manchester United, according to reports.

The Glazer’s ownership of the Red Devils has been met with protest in recent years and until now, they were expected to be selling the club in full.

However, one of the alleged options on the table would see Ratcliffe take a majority stake of over 50 per cent, with the two Glazers retaining a combined 20 per cent.

This is according to the Daily Mail, who broke the story on Wednesday. If true this is true, it would be highly controversial.

It’s noted that if the reported bid is accepted, it would mean the connection with the Glazers, whose ‘leveraged buyout in 2005 plunged United into hundreds of millions of debt,’ continues.

The Daily Mail add that those close to the process, say Ratcliffe’s proposal may well prove to be the preferred option with the two Glazer brothers.

In addition to the Glazers retaining a 20% stake, the final percentage currently owned by various investment groups would also ‘remain in place.’

Al Thani final bid expected by Friday

However, as noted by TEAMtalk, Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani is still firmly in the bidding war for Man Utd.

Al Thani’s offer, in contrast, is for a full ownership of the Red Devils, which would see the Glazers lose all stakes in the club.

Indeed, he has no interest in a partial takeover and also views a full buyout as a ‘cleaner transaction.’

The deadline for closing bids for Man Utd is on Friday, with a preferred bidder expected to be selected in the coming days.

Now, the Old Trafford faithful are probably hoping that Al Thani is the one who completes the takeover.

Man Utd fans won’t be happy with Ratcliffe bid

These developments come after the Man United Supporters Trust or ‘MUST,’ demanded that the Glazers ‘accelerate’ a full sale of the club.

In a recent statement, they said: “When it was announced in November that the Glazers were undertaking a “strategic review” and inviting offers to buy the Club, MUST welcomed the news.

“We went on to urge the majority owners to move ahead with the process with speed, so that any period of uncertainty was as short as possible.

“Nearly five months on, we read speculation that offers from prospective buyers remain below the Glazers valuation, and that a third round of offers will now be invited.”

“With Erik Ten Hag having made such great progress in his first season, and with the vital summer transfer window a matter of weeks away, the news of these delays and further prolonged uncertainty are of great concern,” MUST added.

“Erik needs to know what resources he has to spend so he can make the signings the Club needs, and the whole management resources of the Club need to be focussed on supporting him in that.”

Now, one could only imagine how furious fans would be if the Glazers retain a 20% stake in Man Utd. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see which bid is accepted in the coming days.
