Man Utd urged to exercise caution in surprise chase for £75m striker comfortably outscoring Ronaldo this season

Manchester United have been urged to exercise caution in their reported bid to sign prolific Roma striker Tammy Abraham this summer.

Since arriving in Rome, Abraham has flourished under former United, Chelsea and Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho. Indeed, the frontman has enjoyed a stellar campaign so far, notching 23 times and adding four assists.

And with the futures of Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani all currently uncertain, the Red Devils have been tipped to make a surprise move for Abraham.

A report from Italian news outlet Corriere della Sera claims that United are willing to spend €90m (£75m) on the forward.

However, former England striker Kevin Phillips is not convinced that would be a wise move.

Phillips told Football Insider, when asked about United’s interest in Abraham: “I’m not sure for that sort of money.

“Credit to the player for going over to Italy and take the challenge on. He is doing well and is scoring goals.

“We saw Lukaku do something similar when he left Man United to go to Inter Milan. He came back as a £100million player but that has not worked. That has not been the great success that we all thought it would be.

Manchester United are being linked with Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder Palhinha as they look to replace Nemanja Matic.

“I fear it would be a similar scenario with Abraham, to be honest. The football over there is nowhere near as competitive or as good as it is in the Premier League.

“Tammy found it hard at times when he was here. I’d be very cautious to spend that kind of money on him.”

Abraham finding life in Italy a breeze

Even though the England man has clearly excelled in Italy, he did find life in the Premier League much tougher.

Abraham scored 30 times in 82 games for the Blues before heading to Serie A. He was also loaned out three times to Bristol City, Swansea and Aston Villa respectively.

Roma coughed up £34million to land the frontman on Mourinho’s say-so and he’s so far been a huge success.

Indeed, Abraham’s 23 goals are five more than United’s current top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo. The former Blues man also has one more assist than the Old Trafford legend.

On current form, Abraham also looks a certainty to be in the England squad for this winter’s Qatar World Cup.
