Manchester United have been boosted in their pursuit of Sofyan Amrabat as a La Liga club has opened negotiations for Donny Van de Beek.

It’s no secret that Erik ten Hag is looking to add to his midfield options this summer. The Reds are after a new holding midfielder and Amrabat is at the top of their radar.

However, the club must first offload Van de Beek and Fred in order to push through a move for the Moroccan international.

Ten Hag has been handed a boost as Real Sociedad have entered negotiations with Man Utd in regards to the Dutch midfielder.

According to Noticias de Gipuzkoa, the Spanish club are exploring the option of signing Van de Beek on loan with the option to purchase next summer.

Given Van de Beek’s lack of football of late, selling him on a permanent basis could prove tricky. It remains to be seen if Man Utd would accept this kind of proposal, but the offer is reportedly on the table.

Following David Silva’s retirement from football, Real Sociedad are in the market for a new creative midfielder. As La Liga is less physically demanding than the Premier League, the move could suit Van de Beek.

Since moving to Manchester in 2020, the 26-year-old has only started in 11 Premier League matches and five of those stars were with Everton.

Van de Beek leaves the door open

The midfielder is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025, with the club holding the option of extending his deal by a further year.

A fresh start is probably the best thing for Van de Beek right now. He has shown glimpses of quality during pre-season, particularly against Lyon where he scored the only goal of the game.

After his impressive pre-season showing, the midfielder left the door open in terms of his next move.

“For now, it’s hard to say where my future is. I’ve come back now after injury and I’m fit now, so I play my first minutes after training for a few weeks, so I try to push as hard as possible,” Van de Beek told reporters.

“Every day [something] can happen, so it’s hard to say now where my future will be. In football you never know, especially with me, so let’s see what happens.”

Offloading Van de Beek will then give Man Utd some more wriggle room to afford Amrabat. The club are also looking to sell Fred, who is currently in negotiations with Galatasaray.

Fabrizio Romano has clarified that the reports regarding Van de Beek are true, although no agreement has yet been made.

“Real Sociedad are actively working to sign Donny Van de Beek from Man Utd,” the journalist confirmed.

“Negotiations are ongoing but still no agreement on formula of the deal and personal terms. Talks continue. Man United wait for Donny/Fred to leave then push for Amrabat.”
