Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has savagely told one of his players they will not be able to leave even though they handed in a transfer request, according to a report.

Man Utd have yet to add any new faces to their squad this summer, although that could soon change. After previously hitting an impasse in their talks to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea, there is now renewed optimism that the transfer will go through.

As per the Daily Mail, representatives from Man Utd and Chelsea are preparing to get back round the negotiating table. Man Utd are willing to increase their third £55m offer slightly, while Chelsea may be open to accepting less than the £65m they demanded for the player recently.

It is claimed an agreement should be reached ‘in the next week’. After that, it should not take Man Utd too much longer to announce Mount’s signing as he has already agreed personal terms with them.

But while Mount could end up at Old Trafford this summer, several members of Ten Hag’s squad are expected to leave. The list includes Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, Anthony Elanga, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek and Tom Heaton.

Surprisingly, Heaton may end up training and playing alongside Mount next season as The Telegraph have provided an intriguing update on his future.

They reveal Man Utd had previously given Heaton the green light to leave so he can play regularly. The goalkeeper was David de Gea’s deputy last season and only made two appearances in all competitions, with both of those coming in the League Cup.

Luton Town, who are currently preparing for their first top-flight campaign since 1991-92, immediately expressed interest in signing Heaton. Luton boss Rob Edwards landed on the vastly experienced 37-year-old as his ideal number one to try and keep the club in the Premier League.

Man Utd prevent player from leaving – report

As such, Heaton sent Man Utd a transfer request. However, Ten Hag has brutally rejected it as he might need to select Heaton for Man Utd next season.

The decision comes amid Man Utd’s rather messy keeper situation. They initially offered De Gea a new deal – with his current terms due to expire this summer – but then backed out of the contract offer. The Spaniard is therefore preparing to find a new club.

Man Utd also have Dean Henderson in their squad. But he is still recovering after undergoing surgery on a thigh injury. And even when Henderson returns, he will aim to secure a permanent move away from Man Utd as he does not feel they can offer him enough game time.

As a result, Man Utd will have to start the new campaign with Heaton as their first-choice keeper unless they manage to finalise Andre Onana’s signing.

Man Utd are getting closer to agreeing a deal with Inter which will involve an initial £42m payment. The transfer could end up being worth £50m depending on bonus clauses.

Both Heaton and Luton will likely be furious about Man Utd preventing their move from going ahead. But this is simply the drastic measures Ten Hag must take amid his serious issues in the goalkeeping department.

Heaton’s contract with Man Utd only runs until 2024, which means he will be able to leave them on a free next summer. By then, however, it is likely Luton will have found an alternative keeper and therefore will not need him.

Meanwhile, Man Utd appear set to miss out on a La Liga target as Aston Villa are in ‘advanced talks’ to land him first.
