Manchester United have been given the green light to pursue a deal for Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard after a significant update from trusted transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils have once again backed Erik ten Hag in the transfer market with some £165m being spent so far this summer. And while Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund strengthen United’s spine, the Dutchman would, in an ideal world, like to add two more names before the window shuts.
Unfortunately for Ten Hag, however, the Red Devils are now at the stage where they need to sell before they can add more new names. To that end, Ten Hag only has around £10m left to play with from the Glazers’ £175m summer budget.
As a result, work is going on behind the scenes to move a few players on before the window closes.
However, efforts to offload Harry Maguire appear to have stagnated. The England defender has held talks over a move to West Ham, though it seems the move has now hit a dead end. And while United hope the £30m move could yet be resurrected, it seems David Moyes is now targeting a former Arsenal man instead.
As a result, Ten Hag has made it clear that Maguire can still figure in his plans, though he is currently fourth choice in his central defensive pecking order behind Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.
Nonetheless, United still hope to raise more funds in the coming days. And the likes of Dean Henderson, Brandon Williams, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek could all move for fairly sizeable fees before the window shuts.
Benjamin Pavard makes Man Utd transfer move clear
One man who has been targeted should Maguire move on is Bayern Munich star Pavard. The versatile France defender is capable of playing either at right-back or as a centre-half, offering Ten Hag the flexibility he would like.
However, with United now operating under something of a one-in, one-out basis, their hopes of signing Pavard essentially rest on moving Maguire on first.
Nonetheless, Pavard is doing everything he can his end to try and put the transfer wheels in motion.
And according to Romano, the 27-year-old has made clear to Bayern chiefs that he wants to make the move to Old Trafford if the opportunity arises.
Speaking to Givemesport, Romano said: “Currently, Bayern are not keen on this move, but my feeling is that there is a chance for Pavard to join Man Utd because the player wants to go.
“Over the weekend and the last few days, Pavard has spoken to Bayern and told them he won’t extend his contract and wants to join Manchester United to try this opportunity. So, let’s see now what happens between the clubs.”
Pavard’s current deal at Bayern is due to expire in summer 2024, meaning they are at risk of losing him on a free next summer.
As such, Bayern chiefs have responded by naming their price for the player, which has been reportedly set at €40m (£35m). However, given his contract situation, United would hope to achieve his signing for potentially less than that.
But knowing the player is keen on the move will surely encourage Ten Hag and his signing could prove a welcome addition before the window closes.
In the meantime, journalist Ben Jacobs claims United plan fresh talks with Maguire to try and come to an agreement over his future.
