Jadon Sancho has not been impressing Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, who has made sure the winger knows it, according to a report.
Man Utd signed Sancho for big money in 2021 after spending more than a year trying to lure him from Borussia Dortmund. What has followed has been underwhelming, with the former Manchester City academy player failing to justify his big price yet.
In his first season in the Premier League, Sancho scored just three goals from 29 appearances for Man Utd. He should be able to surpass that tally this season, having got two goals from 10 top-flight games to his name so far in 2022-23. But he was unable to earn a place in England’s squad for the World Cup.
Not only does Sancho have to win over Gareth Southgate again, he also has to convince his club manager of his worth.
According to AS, Ten Hag has told Sancho that he is “not satisfied” with his performances so far. In fact, he has urged the 22-year-old to show “more commitment”.
Per the report, sorting out Sancho’s form is the next big issue for Ten Hag to address after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, whom he did not see eye to eye with.
It remains to be seen how Sancho will respond to Ten Hag’s intervention. After scoring double figures of goals in the last three of his four seasons with Borussia Dortmund, it wouldn’t be unfair to suggest he should be demanding more from himself.
He hasn’t started a Premier League match since October due to Ten Hag favouring other options, as well as illness.
Sancho needs to justify worth soon
After the World Cup, he will have to work hard to convince his manager he deserves more opportunities. Ten Hag can also call upon the likes of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho in the roles Sancho can play in.
Rashford has been in better form, as evidenced by the fact he made it to the World Cup whereas Sancho did not. The 25-year-old has been making the most of his opportunity to impress in Qatar, too.
Antony was a summer signing whom Ten Hag already trusted during their Ajax days. Meanwhile, Garnacho has been showing his own potential in recent weeks.
Furthermore, Man Utd are working on the signing of Netherlands international Cody Gakpo for 2023. It would add further competition in their frontline.
Hence, Sancho needs to up his game in order to prove himself to Ten Hag. With a contract until at least 2026, there is still time for him to develop. He is only 22, after all.
But after how much Man Utd invested in him, he will have to hurry up his progress.
