Erik ten Hag is keen to revamp his upcoming midfield options, and a report has revealed why Man Utd are well placed to beat Chelsea to an Aurelien Tchouameni transfer.
The Ajax boss looks destined to succeed Ralf Rangnick in the Old Trafford dugout. A verbal agreement has already been struck and the Sun recently revealed how the Dutchman left United chiefs stunned in his explosive interview.
United certainly look like they need a change of direction at present, and Ten Hag will be entrusted with charting their course.
To put them on the right path from the get go, a blockbuster summer transfer window could be on the cards.
Central midfield has long been a lightning rod for criticism. The likes of Fred and Scott McTominay always give maximum effort, though there are doubts as to whether they have the quality to put United on pace with Man City and Liverpool.
One world class target United have been linked with is Leeds ace Kalvin Phillips. Indeed, the Manchester Evening News recently confirmed the framework towards a summer approach is being put in place.
However, the Sun later detailed three reasons why a Phillips move to Manchester is a total non-starter.
Instead, ESPN report Ten Hag could push United towards signing Monaco and France midfielder, Aurelien Tchouamani.
Tchouameni the ideal engine room upgrade
The article notes United’s recruitment team are currently compiling lists of targets for multiple positions.
However, Ten Hag will be given the opportunity to put forward his own options. One of them, according to ESPN, is Tchouameni.
The Frenchman, 22, has developed a reputation for being an attacker’s worst nightmare in midfield. His propensity for racking up gaudy tackle and interception stats have frustrated many a forward.
ESPN note Ten Hag is ‘keen’ to have him anchoring his midfield and explain why Manchester United are the frontrunners ahead of PSG and Chelsea.
Chelsea very keen to sign Tchouameni this summer
Chelsea will push for Tchouameni signing this summer as they identify problems in midfield. PSG, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United all interested as well
Firstly, it’s claimed Tchouameni would favour a move out of France if he does depart. That already puts United ahead of PSG.
Chelsea have reportedly ‘made contact’ with both the player’s agent and Monaco. However, their off-field uncertainty means the only sure thing about Chelsea’s summer plans is that nothing’s for sure.
Monaco are described as ‘open’ to selling their most prized asset this summer. The French outfit will reportedly seek a transfer fee of between €60m-€70m (roughly £50m-£58m).
