Ten Hag reaction: ‘Never any panic’ as Man Utd storm back to beat West Ham in cup with one star ‘unplayable’
Erik ten Hag praised his Manchester United side for ‘not panicking’ as came from behind to beat West Ham in the FA Cup, with one Red Devils star was virtually unplayable.
Alejandro Garnacho inspired United to a late comeback win against the Hammers as Ten Hag’s men sealed progress to the quarter-finals three days on from their Carabao Cup triumph.
Sunday’s 2-0 victory against Newcastle secured the Old Trafford giants’ first silverware since 2017 but the manager’s immediate message to his players was “get back to work”.
United looked set to be brought back down to earth with a bump after Said Benrahma put David Moyes’ West Ham into a deserved lead at Old Trafford.
But Nayef Aguerd’s 77th-minute own goal sparked an impressive turnaround, with teenager Garnacho’s superb 90th-minute effort followed by a stoppage-time strike by Fred in a 3-1 triumph.
And speaking after the game, Ten Hag told ITV 1: “It was not easy, it is never easy after you win a cup and celebrate, then you have to get back to business as usual that was our task and finally we found a way to win.
“The resilience and belief they were going to win was magnificent.
On Alejandro Garnacho’s goal, he added: “It was a great goal, you could see he was growing into the game and taking players on, he was difficult to stop and he was really a threat.
“It was a great goal but I think it was the total set up for the last 30 minutes. I had a strong feeling we could win the game, you could see the belief and composure there was never any panic.”
On playing Fulham in the next round: “It will be difficult they are playing really well so we will have to be at our best to win.”
Maguire praises United reaction
Harry Maguire admitted a poor start cost United getting up a head of steam before they eventually came through, adding: “We made it hard work for ourselves. We was poor in the first half, we have got to start better than that.
“We conceded a soft goal but it is an amazing reaction and we kept fighting and it really felt like it was coming.

“Garnacho is very good, he is a young boy with amazing talent he has got the world at his feet if he works and trains hard like he is at the moment.
“The best teams never stop believing. I am not saying we are one of the best teams yet, we have a lot to do but we are getting there, we are taking steps forward we have a philosophy we were really trying to score. It felt like the Stretford End was sucking the goal in at the end there.”
