Transfer Gossip: Barcelona in Frenkie de Jong smokescreen as Man Utd hopes significantly grow; Everton close on significant raid for Wolves star

Manchester United have renewed belief they can land Frenkie de Jong amid a double update on the Dutchman, Everton are closing on a Wolves star, while Monday’s Transfer Gossip has details on a big-money departure at Chelsea.

Manchester United remain strongly on the trail of Frenkie de Jong amid a renewed belief they can sign him, as per the latest reports.

The Barcelona star has been the subject of months on intense speculation surrounding his future. He has been unequivocally Erik ten Hag’s No 1 transfer target of the summer as he looks to add more control to his midfield. That area was brutally exposed once again as United lost their opening game of the season, 2-1 at home to Brighton.

However, getting a deal over the line for De Jong has proved extremely problematic. After days of wrangling with Barcelona over a fee, that has now finally been set at around £73m. But convincing the player to depart has been another issue altogether, amid a series of deferred wages that Barcelona owe the midfielder.

The LaLiga giants themselves continue to send out mixed messages over the star’s future.

Indeed, Barcelona president Joan Laporta provided an update on the saga on Sunday which suggsts his sale looks unlikely.

“Frenkie’s our player, and we want him to stay at Barcelona. He wants to stay too,” Laporta said.

“With him and his teammates, we have a very powerful midfield. He has offers, but we want him to stay”.

However, United remain on his trail and former United defender Jaap Stam claims De Jong does want to sign.

Frenkie de Jong exit remains likely

That theory is backed up by the Daily Express, who are adamant Laporta’s words are a smokescreen and they still want to jettison the player.

They desperately need him gone so they can raise funds and register their new players like Jules Kounde, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.

Furthermore, his refusal to accept a wages cut – namely due to the fact he’s already owed wages – is largely behind that stance.

That theory appears to be backed up by Spanish publication Sport, who also are adamant that De Jong will depart.

Could a potential Frenkie De Jong transfer hold the key to Manchester United's centre-back partnership this season?

Would missing out on the signing of Frenkie de Jong for Manchester United mean a different centre-back partnership will be formed than the one Erik ten Hag wants judging from pre-season?

They claim the club are intent on pushing through the signing of Bernardo Silva, further limiting De Jong’s prospects.

And with a World Cup on the horizon, De Jong knows he will have no chance of making the Netherlands squad were he to stay.

The Express are adamant too that Manchester United remain favourites despite the presence of Chelsea. They suggest the player’s strong relationship with Ten Hag will ensure the move will eventually goes through.

Experienced Wolves defender Conor Coady is on the brink of leaving Wolves to join Everton, as per multiple reports.

The centre-back, 29, has been a huge player in Wolves‘ modern history, helping them establish themselves as a Premier League club. The England defender has made 317 appearances for the club over seven seasons.

A huge crowd favourite at Molineux, club captain Coady was left on the bench for Saturday’s defeat at Leeds.

Now it has emerged that the reasons behind that were amid claims that will be his last game as a Wolves player.

Conor Coady, Wolves, April 2022.

As per Football Insider, Coady has already undergone part of his medical at Everton ahead of a move to Goodison Park.

That should now be finalised in the coming days, with Coady likely to be available for Everton’s next match at Aston Villa.

Former Liverpool man Coady is likely to sign on an initial loan deal which will be made permanent next summer.

And Frank Lampard plans to use Coady as part of a three-man defence alongside Yerri Mina and James Tarkowski.

And Lampard has stepped up that hunt amid a serious injury sustained by Ben Godfrey.

Coady will be one of three new signings at Everton this week alongside Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye.

Onana will sign in a giant £33.7m move after the Toffees pipped West Ham to his signing.

Timo Werner is on the brink of ending his miserable spell at Chelsea by returning to RB Leipzig.

The Germany international moved to the Blues in a £47.5m switch in summer 2020 amid plenty of hype.

But despite a promising start, the goals and his confidence soon dried up. As it stands, he has a disappointing 23 goals in 89 appearances for Chelsea.

His future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks. The likes of Newcastle and Juventus have both been strongly linked.

And it was the Magpies who appeared favourites. That’s amid claims that Werner is determined to prove he can make it in the Premier League.

However, Newcastle have not followed up on their interest. As such, Werner is now on the brink of sealing a return to Leipzig.

As per trusted transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Werner will re-sign for Leipzig on a permanent move.

That transfer will be finalised in the coming days with the clubs close to agreeing a fee.

Werner scored 95 goals and added 40 assists in 159 games for Leipzig, before his move to Stamford Bridge.

But the writing was on the wall when he was left out of his squad for Saturday’s win at Everton.
