Transfer Gossip: Christian Eriksen breaks promise in U-turn over Man Utd future; Tottenham target move for ‘next Erling Haaland’
Manchester United face a race against time to seal the signing of Christian Eriksen amid claims of broken promises, Tottenham are looking at a deal for a striker branded ‘the next Erling Haaland’, while Thursday’s Transfer Gossip claims seven stars are up for sale at Arsenal.
MAN UTD MOVE SEES CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN GO BACK ON PROMISE
Manchester United face a race against time to secure the signing of Christian Eriksen after it emerged that the star has gone back on his word to sign for the Red Devils.
The classy Danish star is on the verge of securing a free-transfer switch to Old Trafford. He has agreed a lucrative three-year deal, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2025. But his signing with the Red Devils will see Eriksen break a promise he made to Daniel Levy upon leaving Tottenham back in January 2020.
Departing for the Neraruzzi in a cut-price £20m fee, the Daily Express reports that Eriksen gave Levy his word that he would never sign for one of Tottenham’s rivals.
Eriksen had spent six-and-a-half fruitful seasons in north London and, with his contract expiring, Spurs were left with no choice but to sell. And while his exit hurt the club, Levy could take some comfort in Eriksen’s guarantee that he wouldn’t sign for one of their rivals at the top end of the Premier League.
Of course, Eriksen’s career – and life in fact – took a dramatic turn with the player suffering a near-fatal cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.
His recovery – and subsequent resurrection of his football career – has been one of the stories of 2022. However, he may have some explaining to do to Levy after going back on his word.
His signing will hopefully go through this week, with Eriksen turning his back on Brentford to head north.
Christian Eriksen medical still to be booked in
The 30-year-old’s move to Old Trafford is expected to go through before the end of the week.
That move, of course, will be subject to a medical, though the BBC reporter Simon Stone reports Manchester United are yet to book that in.
As such, they now face a race against time to secure his signing ahead of their pre-season tour.
United’s senior squad and coaching staff are due to depart Manchester Airport on Friday, heading to Thailand for a game with Liverpool on July 12.
Erik Ten Hag targeting Christian Eriksen move for Manchester United
Christian Eriksen could solve Manchester United’s problems this summer with free transfer
They are then due in Australia for matches against Melbourne Victory (Friday July 12), Crystal Palace (Tuesday July 19) and Aston Villa (Saturday 23 July).
As it stands, Eriksen will not be on that flight, though he could of course hook up with the side at a later date.
However, United remain confident Eriksen will sign on the dotted line. And he looks destined to become the second signing of the Erik ten Hag era after Tyrell Malacia.
TOTTENHAM CHASE DEAL FOR BENJAMIN SESKO
Tottenham are reportedly considering a move for Benjamin Sesko, who is making big waves with Red Bull Salzburg.
The Austrian club have an excellent recent history for unearthing some of the game’s biggest stars. Indeed, this summer alone they have offloaded Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen (both to Leeds). Karim Adeyemi has also been on the move, sealing a huge deal to Borussia Dortmund.
Prior to that, they also had the likes of Sadio Mane, Erling Haaland, Dominik Szoboszlai and Takumi Minamino on their books.
Now Sesko looks to be their next star in the making – with the striker already drawing comparisons as ‘the next Erling Haaland’.
Indeed, the Daily Express claims Spurs are readying an approach for the Slovenian. The 19-year-old hit 10 goals in 36 appearances last season and already has 13 caps for his country.
Tottenham are not short of attacking options following the recent capture of Richarlison.
However, Antonio Conte is reportedly a huge admirer of Sesko, seeing him as a possible long-term heir to Harry Kane.
Spurs have been very active so far this summer, making four signings.
Djed Spence looks likely to become the next arrival, with a £20m deal reportedly closing in.
SEVEN STARS PUT UP FOR SALE AT ARSENAL
Arsenal are reportedly circulating the names of seven players they want to offload this summer.
Mikel Arteta has already spent £83m on new recruits Fabio Vieira, Gabriel Jesus, Marquinhos and Matt Turner. But they still want to invest more into their squad. To that end, Arteta is eyeing a left-back, a midfielder and a centre-half.
Indeed, it’s no secret that Arsenal are looking to sign Alex Grimaldo and Lisandro Martinez. And it seems they are ready to land Youri Tielemans in midfield after a big reveal on the Leicester man’s future.
However, outlays for all three is likely to cost Arsenal a further £75m. And in order to fund that spree, The Sun claims they have put seven stars up for sale.
They state Nicolas Pepe, Bernd Leno, Hector Bellerin and Lucas Torreira are up for grabs. They may be joined through the exit doors by Pablo Mari, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Reiss Nelson.
Record signing Pepe is the biggest of those names. He signed for Arsenal in summer 2019 for £72m, but has struggled to claim a regular shirt.
The Gunners will now accept a big loss on him and may even allow him to leave on loan.
Sales of all seven stars could generate around £50m for Arsenal, and will see them make big savings on wages.
