Transfer Gossip: Man Utd plotting five-signing spree with revived target to force £50m star out; Aubameyang makes Chelsea decision

Borussia Dortmund defender Thomas Meunier

Man Utd could make a quintet of high profile signings in the next fortnight, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has reached a decision on who he’ll join if he leaves Barcelona – both in Thursday’s Transfer Gossip.

As many as five new signings are being targeted at Old Trafford before the September 1 deadline. United’s window thus far has generally been characterised by drawn-out sagas and a lack of end product.

Two humbling defeats to begin the campaign has once again soured the mood in Manchester. A sure-fire way to lift spirits is through the transfer market, and per the Telegraph, that’s exactly what Manchester United aim to do.

They report five additions are on the agenda including a new right-back, two midfielders, a winger and a striker.

A second Telegraph report details who could tick the first category – Thomas Meunier.

The Borussia Dortmund and Belgium veteran, now 30, is in their sights and a fee of around £12.6m has been proposed.

Whether Dortmund are actually open to selling isn’t specified, though if they are, he’s deemed a more ‘likely’ target than Barcelona’s Sergino Dest.

Both those players are forward-thinking full-backs who like to get on the front foot. That is in stark contrast to £50m man Aaron Wan-Bissaka who will be sacrificed if a right-back arrives.

Man Utd facing £40m Wan-Bissaka loss

Man Utd reportedly want just £10m for his permanent sale this summer, with former club Crystal Palace interested.

It’s suggested the Eagles may well be ready to pull the trigger on that move given the lowly price. A £10m sale would cement Wan-Bissaka’s transfer firmly in the mistake column at United – an all too frequent occurrence in recent times.

Alternatively, the loan route could be explored. Either way, Wan-Bissaka will be the fall guy if a new right-back arrives.

Ironically, the report adds Meunier was a Man Utd target back in 2019, though they signed Wan-Bissaka instead.

Regarding the other positions they’re seeking to address, the winger role looks like it’ll be filled by one of Antony, Cody Gakpo or Christian Pulisic.

Chelsea are open to loaning Pulisic out providing he signs a new contract first. Gakpo could be available for £35m from PSV Eindhoven and was deemed the easiest target to sign by Fabrizio Romano.

Antony is now valued at around £80m by Ajax and two reasons why he won’t join United were recently detailed.

One of the two midfielders Ten Hag is pursuing is frequent target, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The Lazio ace has been the subject of United contact in recent days, according to FootMercato.

Real Madrid’s Casemiro is another option and the Telegraph conclude that contrary to other reporting, the Brazilian may actually be gettable if he tells Carlo Ancelotti he wants to go and United bid £50m.

That would be a high price to pay for a 30-year-old, though desperate times call for desperate measures.

A striker tipped to potentially fill the void at Old Trafford if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The ex-Arsenal hitman only joined Barcelona in January. However, the arrival of Robert Lewandowski could see him squeezed out.

Aubameyang was listed as a United target by the Sun earlier this week, while links to Chelsea continue to grow with each passing day.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel maintains a strong relationship with the striker who he managed at Dortmund between 2015-17. The double exits of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner have left Chelsea light up top.

Now, the Telegraph’s Matt Law has shed light on where Aubameyang will go if he does leave the Camp Nou.

Law tweeted if Aubameyang does depart, his understanding is he will join Chelsea, not Man Utd.

He also claimed talks are underway, something Romano claimed would begin this week with part-Blues owner, Todd Boehly, seeking to ascertain what sort of personal terms Aubameyang will demand.

Once that information has been gathered a Blues bid is expected to be lodged. Barcelona value the 33-year-old around the £25m mark.

Wolves have completed the signing of highly-rated Portugal international and Liverpool target, Matheus Nunes.

The 23-year-old emerged on Liverpool’s radar amid a mounting early-season injury crisis in midfield.

Nunes played for Sporting Lisbon and was viewed as an ideal candidate to slot straight into Jurgen Klopp’s ranks.

However, the Reds opted against acting, leaving the door ajar for Wolves. The Molineux club have never shied away from signing Portuguese stars, and this time, it’s a big one.

Wolves confirmed the acquisition via their official website with Nunes signing a five-year contract. The deal also contains an option for a further 12 months.

Nunes set Wolves back a cool £42.2m – a new club record. The previous mark was held by young striker Fabio Silva (£35m).

With Nunes off the table, the demand for Liverpool to sign Klopp favourite Jude Bellingham next summer will now grow.
