Erik ten Hag is hoping to push through a transfer for Frenkie de Jong, but he has a back-up plan as he looks to reshape his Manchester United midfield, according to a report.
Man Utd are understood to have made progress in transfer talks with Barcelona this week and a deal for De Jong is in sight. United are willing to pay £56.2m, plus performance-related bonuses, according to The Times.
While Sky Sports have been told the clubs have a “broad agreement” in place.
However, the one main stumbling block could be that the Netherlands international does not want the transfer.
“The only thing I know from Frenkie is that he wants to stay at Barca,” Koeman told TV3.
“In fact, a couple of days ago he said that: ‘I want to stay at Barca.’
If that proves to be the case then United might be forced to look elsewhere and Youri Tielemans could be that man.
The Times reports that the Leicester midfielder “is of interest to Ten Hag”. However, it is noted that it’s not known how high up United’s target list the Belgium star features.
Tielemans was linked with United earlier in the summer. He has one year left on his contract and is also a target for Arsenal.
Leicester are keen to keep the 25-year-old and have been speaking to the player, who said in March he would decide on his future this summer.
What is clear is that Ten Hag’s midfield will have a different look to the one left behind by Ralf Rangnick.
McTominay liked by Ten Hag
Christian Eriksen has been offered a contract, but is still deciding his future after a six-month spell at Brentford.
Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata have all left. And the Dutch boss has been left with Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek as central options.
And one player who will definitely feature under Ten Hag is Scotland midfielder McTominay.
The newspaper reports that Ten Hag sees McTominay as a “pivotal player in his first team plans”.
Newcastle are believed to have made an enquiry for the player earlier in the window. The Magpies fell short of making a formal approach, but United would have rejected any offer out of hand.
McTominay, 25, has three years left on his contract and he is wanted by Ten Hag and the feeling is mutual because the player also wanted to develop under United’s new manager.
