Manchester United transfer news: Ismaila Sarr under consideration in attack after sensational goal

Ismaila Sarr is under consideration for a transfer to Manchester United as they move on from Marko Arnautovic, it has been revealed.

Manchester United wanted to bring in Arnautovic from Bologna this month to replenish their attack. However, various factors have caused them to end their pursuit. Yet they still want to add to their strike force by the end of the window.

The club are yet to sign a replacement for Edinson Cavani since his release, while doubts linger about the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.

As such, Manchester United are weighing up alternatives to Arnautovic. Ideally, they are looking for someone willing to play a rotation role. In that regard, Arnautovic could have made sense due to him coming from a smaller club.

But Man Utd have moved on and are scouring the market for alternatives. Interestingly, one option mentioned by 90min is Watford winger Ismaila Sarr.

Although not a centre-forward himself by trade, he can play in that position. Usually, though, he favours a role as a winger.

According to 90min, Sarr is under consideration by United. Since dropping back down to the Championship with Watford, he has contributed an assist in his first game and a goal in his second – and not just any.

Sarr scored from within his own half during a draw against West Bromwich Albion on Monday. It certainly caught the attention.

Now, Man Utd could be among the onlookers if Sarr is to seal a Premier League return by the end of the month. There are only two years left on his contract with Watford, who therefore may prefer a sale sooner rather than later.

The Senegal international has scored 25 goals in 94 appearances for the Hornets. Previously, he played in France for Metz and Rennes.

With Rennes, he reached Europa League standard – the continental competition United will be in this season.

Ismaila Sarr a talent but Man Utd should focus on strikers

There is little doubting Sarr’s ability, as his recent wonder goal reminded what he is capable of.

But is he the type of player United should be going after at this stage? The emphasis has been on the incorporation of a new centre-forward, which Sarr is not naturally.

Out wide, they already have a few options, such as Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga. Christian Eriksen or Anthony Martial could also play there in theory.

Hence, they have more depth in the wide zones than they do up front. That said, Sarr could be an upgrade on some of their wingers. What’s more, there have been links with other wide attackers like Cody Gakpo, so it is an area they are looking at.

If they can only pick between a centre-forward and a wide player, though, the former may be the more pressing need.
