Wout Weghorst: Man Utd move branded a ‘stunt’ as Dutch icon questions ‘very strange’ striker link

As Manchester United take steps towards the signing of Wout Weghorst, a stunned former Netherlands international has claimed that the move “must be a stunt”.

Weghorst appears to have been chosen as the man to add depth to the Man Utd attack. The club have been looking for reinforcements up front ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left in November. However, they have had to look at short-term reinforcements rather than world-class superstars.

In recent days, it has become more evident that they are settling for Weghorst. The Dutch striker has been spending the season on loan at Besiktas from Burnley.

However, reports have suggested he has agreed to join Man Utd, which would mean the cancellation of his spell in Turkey.

Weghorst, 30, remains under contract with Burnley until 2025. But the Championship side could be ready to send him to Man Utd for another new challenge.

The proposed move has admittedly raised some eyebrows. Weghorst only scored twice in 20 Premier League appearances for Burnley last season.

His record with Besiktas has been better; he has scored eight goals in 16 Super Lig games so far. But the question remains as to whether he is of the appropriate level for Man Utd.

One observer who is in disbelief about the idea of Weghorst becoming a Man Utd player is former Netherlands midfielder, Wesley Sneijder.

Discussing the potential move on Veronica Offside, Sneijder reacted: “Surely not! I would find that very strange.

“Maybe they’ve seen the trick with the free kick [in the World Cup quarter-final against Argentina] but I don’t think they fall for that in England anymore!

“In terms of a striker, is he really someone United are waiting for? I don’t think so.”

Sneijder claims Wout Weghorst to Man Utd ‘really can’t be true’

When it was put to Sneijder that Weghorst may just be a plan B option that Erik ten Hag can turn to in order to offer something different if needed, the former Real Madrid and Inter star was still sceptical.

Sneijder responded: “They still have about 300 of those in the Premier League.

“It must be a stunt. This really can’t be true.”

Should the move get over the line, Man Utd will be the biggest club Weghorst has ever represented. He has played for some clubs with decent reputations before, such as AZ and Wolfsburg, but this would be a step up.

Europa League football would be on offer to him for the first time since his spell with Wolfsburg (for whom he also featured in the Champions League).

Weghorst has decent pedigree, but expectations at Man Utd are high. Whether he can meet them is another matter.

But with a Dutch coach in charge in the shape of Ten Hag – and other players with a knowledge of Dutch football in the squad, like Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez – perhaps Weghorst will be able to make the transition.

Still, picking a striker who was relegated from the Premier League last season is a surprising move by Man Utd.
