Youri Tielemans: Man Utd interest growing as Ten Hag plan emerges and Brendan Rodgers makes major admission

Manchester United are ready to step up interest in signing Youri Tielemans, with Erik ten Hag a huge admirer of the player, according to a report.

The Leicester star finds himself at something of a career crossroads. With just under 11 months left on his deal, talks over an extension are yet to yield a positive result for the Foxes. As such, Tielemans looks highly likely to move on this summer.

However, finding a new club for the classy Belgian star has proven harder than many expected. Regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders outside the top six clubs, Tielemans was expected to be quickly snapped up this summer.

Yet for whatever reason, no move has yet been forthcoming for the 25-year-old. He has admirers in Arsenal and, for a long while, he appeared likely to be signing for the Gunners.

There has also been murmourings of interest from United. He is a player of interest to Ten Hag as he looks to bolster his midfield options. And while a deal for Frenkie de Jong is still bubbling along – and Monday’s Transfer Gossip suggests hopes are growing again – it would seem Tielemans only serves as a Plan B option for United.

However, CBS reporter Ben Jacobs claims Tielemans is becoming an increasingly likely option for Ten Hag.

He claims Ten Hag is a huge admirer of the Belgian and is ready to make his move. And despite the signing of Christian Eriksen, the club may yet find room to bring in Tielemans too.

Brendan Rodgers expects Youri Tielemans to depart

Despite not yet finding a new club, Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is still expecting Tielemans to move on this summer.

He, however, has praised Tielemans’ attitude after returning to pre-season training with the Foxes.

But with just a year left on his deal, Rodgers appears resigned to his exit, suggesting Leicester won’t block the sale of a player with under a year left on his contract.

“He’s an amazing guy to work with,” Rodgers said. “He’s happy in his work and he’s happy at the club. But naturally with a year in his contract he may feel he has to look at everything for him and his family.

“But I certainly know he’s committed here while he is here. I’ll have a good chat with Youri next week to get privately what he’s thinking. But it won’t change, whether he’s leaving or staying for another five years, he’ll still be super committed.”

Referring to the possibility of him staying at Leicester and leaving on a free next summer, Rodgers added: “I’m not sure!”

“For that to happen that means there’s been no acceptable offer or there hasn’t been an offer. That’s the reality.

“From Youri’s perspective, he’ll continue to train and work. He’s very focused on getting himself fit and like he always is with the team, he’s a great guy to have in the squad.

“Until that changes, I will give everything to keep developing him and the team. There is a possibility, but we have to wait and see.”

Surely only a matter of time

We at TEAMtalk find it surprising that Youri Tielemans is yet to fix himself up with a new club. The Belgian is a classy operator and quite rightly-regarded as one of the best in the Premier League.

And with the Foxes seeking just £30m, that looks like a stellar signing in this day and age.

Bizarrely, though, Tielemans is yet to get himself fixed up.

Ultimately, that may be down to the player, who has made it known he sees himself leaving Leicester for a Champions League side only. And neither Manchester United or Arsenal can offer the player that level of football.

Neat and tidy in possession, he also added an extra goal threat to his game in season 2021/22.

Indeed, he finished the season with six goals and five assists during the campaign. That takes his tally to 24 goals in 158 appearances for Leicester.

While not the most prolific from midfield, he is one of those players who rarely loses the ball, or his cool and continually keeps things ticking over.

Whatever happens here on it, Tielemans will leave Leicester as a club legend for the goal he scored to win them the FA Cup in 2021.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has issued a brief response to claims he could leave United on loan for Sporting Lisbon.
