A report claims Alexander Isak could still join Newcastle United this summer, despite Real Sociedad asking for a huge fee for the striker.
Isak was heavily linked with Arsenal earlier this year as part of their search for a new goalscorer to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. Despite Arsenal admiring Isak, they have instead gone for Gabriel Jesus to spearhead their attack.
This helps Newcastle as it means they are one of the main suitors to sign Isak, who represents Sweden on the international stage. However, it has not been a simple transfer to complete.
Last month, Eddie Howe’s team sent a £40million bid to Real Sociedad to try and agree a deal. However, this was pushed back as Sociedad value their prized asset closer to £50m.
This huge valuation put Newcastle off Isak and they began to set their sights on other strikers.
However, the potential switch is not dead in the water just yet. According to The Chronicle, Newcastle officials still hope to land Isak.
This is because they are struggling to capture Luis Muriel from Atalanta. The 31-year-old Colombia international is holding out for a Juventus move, forcing Newcastle to plot a new bid for Isak.
The report suggests Newcastle will try to lower Sociedad’s £50m asking price. While it doesn’t reveal exactly how they want to do this, Magpies chiefs do have a couple of options.
Newcastle still on the hunt for Alexander Isak
Firstly, they could offer £40m and then make up the rest in potential bonuses. This would reduce their initial outlay on the La Liga ace.
Secondly, Howe’s team may decide to include one of their own players in the deal, which would also bring the cost down.
Fans will now eagerly wait and see if Newcastle come forward with another approach for Isak.
He is one of several attackers under consideration at the Tyneside club. Moussa Diaby and James Maddison are also liked, although their price tags mean Newcastle pursuits are unlikely to come off.
One more promising transfer is that of Tanguy Ndombele. According to French outlet Media Foot, Newcastle are leading Villarreal in the race to sign the creative midfielder from Tottenham.
It is certainly an exciting time to be a Newcastle fan. 12 months ago, they couldn’t afford any big names due to Mike Ashley refusing to back them properly.
But now, thanks to their wealthy and ambitious new owners, the Magpies can chase players of genuine quality. Isak is definitely on that list.
And so are new arrivals Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Matt Targett. These stars should help Newcastle crack the top 10 this season before potentially qualifying for European competition in the future.
Meanwhile, Newcastle are rivalling French giants Paris Saint-Germain for the signing of a Benfica player, according to reports.
