Anthony Gordon describes impending Newcastle signing as ‘one of the best in the world’

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has described Sandro Tonali as ‘one of the top midfielders in the world’ ahead of his switch from AC Milan.

The Magpies are set to announce the Italy international’s arrival at St James’ Park soon and he is expected to play a key role under Eddie Howe.

Indeed, Tonali’s performances at AC Milan have gained him a reputation as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe. So, he could prove to be a huge signing for Newcastle.

As reported by TEAMtalk, the Tynesiders have agreed on a transfer for a fee of 70m (approx. £59.9m) for Tonali.

This is a record-breaking fee for an Italian player and he has all the attributes to succeed in the Premier League.

During his time at AC Milan, he has made 130 appearances, scoring seven goals and making 13 assists.

His best attributes are at breaking up opposition attacks, as well as his passing. On average, Tonali makes 1.9 tackles and 0.7 interceptions per match, and has a pass success rate of 81%.

So, he could potentially play a big role under Howe next term, as they look to replicate and improve on a tremendous 2022/23 season, which saw them finish in fourth place and reach the League Cup final.

Gordon hails world-class Tonali

Tonali will most likely slot into the Newcastle midfield alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton next season. Although, with Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock’s recent form, Howe has plenty of options at his disposal.

As mentioned, one person who is excited about playing alongside Gordon is Tonali. Speaking to the Chroniclehe said: “I knew him from his early days at Brescia.

“I remember seeing some clips of him before he went to AC Milan. He has excelled and is one of the top midfielders in the world.

“It shows the direction we [Newcastle United] are going in. I’m really looking forward to playing with him.”

Indeed, Newcastle are set to be playing Champions League football next season. So, bringing in players like Tonali is exactly the kind of business they should be doing.

The 23-year-old has already made 18 appearances in the Champions League. In fact, he helped AC Milan reach the semi-finals of the competition last season.

Now, Toon supporters will no doubt be hoping Tonali can help them achieve something similar next term.
