Newcastle transfer latest: Roma ace Nicolo Zaniolo on the radar but Eddie Howe has one big issue

Nicolo Zaniolo of Roma

Newcastle are reported to have made an enquiry over the availability of Nicolo Zaniolo who could be heading for the AS Roma exit door this summer.

The attacking midfielder is attracting plenty of interest with Tottenham also said to be keen. However fresh reports in the Corriere dello Sport say that Newcastle have made an approach. Now they just need to agree a deal with Roma and convince the player to leave.

That could be easier said than done as the 22-year-old is reluctant to leave Italy at this time. Zaniolo has bounced back well after missing the entire 2020/21 Serie A season after damaging his ACL.

The Italy international made 42 appearances last season and scored eight goals. He also chipped in with nine assists to prove he is fully over his injury problems.

Zaniolo also grabbed the only goal in the UEFA Europa Conference League final win over Feyenoord. No surprise then that he is in hot demand this summer.

Roma have said they will talk to the player at the end of the summer if he is still there. That could be with a view to offering him a contract extension.

He is under contract until the end of 2024. Reports in Italy suggest that Zaniolo is in no rush to leave and would prefer to stay in Rome.

But things can change, especially if good offers from England come in. Tottenham are known to be very interested but have yet to make a bid.

It is also claimed that Roma boss Jose Mourinho would not want to sell to his former club. That could put Newcastle in the box seat if Zaniolo was to leave.

Nicolo Zaniolo would be a great addition

Zaniolo would be an excellent addition to the Newcastle side if they can pull off a deal. There is no mention of a transfer fee in the report. But clearly the 22-year-old will come with a hefty price-tag.

However he has his best years ahead of him and his versatility would be huge. Zaniolo can play as an attacking central midfielder but is also comfortable out wide.

Newcastle often rely on Allan Saint-Maximin for the creative spark in the team. Eddie Howe could do with more options and Zaniolo could take the pressure off.

The main problem for Newcastle will be convincing Zaniolo to leave. The youngster seems settled in Rome and is leaning towards staying there.
