Newcastle have seemingly been handed a boost in their efforts to sign Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara following comments by the French club’s president.
The 22-year-old is expected to be the subject of plenty of interest this summer after making a big name for himself in Ligue 1. The fact that he will also be available on a free transfer is likely to have top clubs scrambling for his signature.
Kamara has enjoyed another excellent season for Marseille, who currently sit second in the French top flight. He has been a core member of their side since the tender age of 18.
The defensive midfielder, who has also been linked with Manchester United, was tipped to leave last summer. That would have been Marseille’s last opportunity to cash in on the player, who will soon be out of contract.
Newcastle have already raided Ligue 1 in the last two months after bringing in Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon.
And it would seem that another deal could be on the cards, if Pablo Longoria’s comments ring true.
The Marseille chief has revealed the problems his club faces keeping a player who is unlikely to extend his contract.
Newcastle target new striker this summer with Giovanni Simeone to replace Chris Wood
Newcastle United want Giovanni Simeone this summer from Hellas Verona to replace January signing Chris Wood
He said: “I believe that, until the end, you have to have hope.
“There is no conflict with Boubacar Kamara. His commitment is unquestioned. I do not hide the fact that a club who developed a player is not in a comfortable situation when they could lose him.
Marseille left with few options over Kamara
“To tell the truth, the ending of a contract is a problem in today’s football. We have to think about how the industry works.
“Money that could have been passed between clubs before, now it’s in the pockets of agents and families. There are advantages to being a free player.”
The report in the Daily Express adds that Newcastle are confident they can blow other clubs out of the water with their salary offer to the player.
It would also appear that Marseille are ready to move from Kamara.
Their decision to turn Matteo Guendouzi’s loan switch from Arsenal into a permanent one also hints at an exit for their top star.
They will come as welcome news to Newcastle in their bid to build an impressive new squad.
