Newcastle, Leicester involved in four-club chase of Boubacar Traore as price tag emerges

Metz midfielder Boubacar Traore

A report claims Newcastle United and Leicester City want to sign Metz’s Boubacar Traore, although interest also comes from two more Premier League sides.

Traore had a breakout campaign in Ligue 1 last season. He played 27 times in the competition, after only appearing twice for Metz’s senior team before that.

The central midfielder is 20 years old and looks set for a bright future. Metz know they have a player with high potential on their hands, but they are now preparing to lose him.

The French side were relegated to Ligue 2 after finishing in 19th with 31 points last term. This means they need to sell players such as Traore to improve their finances, while the star himself also wants to move on to feature in a better league.

According to Football Insider, Wolves made a bid for the Mali youngster in January. However, they couldn’t sort out a deal as Metz didn’t need to sell then.

Things have changed though, and now four English teams are vying for Traore’s signature.

Football Insider state Newcastle and Leicester are involved in the discussions. Both clubs would like to bring him to the Premier League to bolster their respective midfields.

Signing Traore now could be a shrewd move if he ends up reaching his full potential, too.

Boubacar Traore in the sights of four clubs

But Southampton and Nottingham Forest will provide competition for Traore, making proceedings complicated.

There had been offers for the player to remain in France. However, with four Prem sides now in the mix, it is highly likely he will end up in England.

Traore will cost £18million, as per the report. This is well within Newcastle’s budget, while Leicester could probably afford this too.

For Southampton and Forest, matching this sum might depend on selling a few players first.

The report claims Traore to be just as good of a prospect as Pape Matar Sarr. He had a successful campaign at Metz before Tottenham captured him for £14.6m in August 2021.

Sarr spent last term back on loan at Metz, and now Traore could follow him to the Prem.

Meanwhile, Youri Tielemans has reportedly chosen his next club amid links with Arsenal and Newcastle.
