A report has provided an insight on which ‘Big Six’ club Bruno Guimaraes could leave Newcastle for in the future, as well as the Magpies’ hopes of tying him down to a new contract.
Newcastle spent an initial £35million to sign Guimaraes from French outfit Lyon in the January transfer window. His capture was an interesting one given the fact he chose to drop out of European competition with Lyon and join Newcastle’s long-term project.
The central midfielder immediately showed his class and has gone on to become a fan favourite at St James’ Park.
Guimaraes is forming a dominant midfield three with Joelinton and Joe Willock. Eddie Howe will also be able to select Jonjo Shelvey there once he returns from injury, while Sean Longstaff is in the squad too.
Guimaraes has excelled since moving to the Premier League and put in one of his best performances in a Newcastle shirt on Saturday.
He hit a brace as Newcastle thrashed Brentford 5-1 at home. This took their tally to 14 points from nine Premier League games this season.
Guimaraes gave Newcastle the lead in the 21st minute when he headed a Kieran Trippier cross into the far corner, via the post.
The Brazilian secured his brace in the second half by winning the ball in midfield before sweeping a right-footed strike past Bees goalkeeper David Raya.
He was joined by Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron on the scoresheet on a great day for Newcastle, while Ethan Pinnock registered an own goal for the visitors.
Bruno Guimaraes future discussed
When reacting to the match and Guimaraes’ display, Craig Hope of the Daily Mail has suggested what lies ahead for the star.
He writes that Manchester City are the only club in the Prem which represents ‘a step up from Newcastle’. They pose the ‘most realistic danger’ when it comes to Guimaraes potentially leaving Tyneside.
Hope believes the 24-year-old is a ready-made Pep Guardiola player too. This is down to his ability to pass, move and retain possession brilliantly.
The report states that a move to City could beckon if Guimaraes continues to shine at Newcastle. However, it also mentions a few reasons why he might just end up staying with the Magpies for the long run.
First of all, Newcastle are protected by Guimaraes’ long-term contract, which runs until summer 2026. And the club’s owners expect contract renewal talks to begin at the end of the current campaign.
Presumably, Newcastle would extend his terms in the north east and also offer him a pay rise. The main aim of this would be to prevent a transfer – to a club such as City – from happening.
Star is enjoying his Newcastle fairytale
Another factor to consider is Guimaraes’ loyalty to Newcastle. Admittedly, his spell there is still in its infancy. But he has formed a fantastic relationship with his team-mates and the club’s supporters.
Right now, it’s hard to see Guimaraes wanting to leave Newcastle. He is playing some of the best football of his career and is getting Brazil caps to show for it.
In addition, we have to talk about Guimaraes’ ambitions with Newcastle. When joining, he said he wanted to be one of the first stars to arrive and take them on a successful journey to the Champions League trophy.
The side’s wealthy ownership means there is a good chance they will get into the top four over the next couple of seasons. Due to this, Guimaraes could realise his Newcastle dream. And this means a switch to City wouldn’t need to take place.
